I had a friend recommend the Wayside Inn as a great place to stay in Carmel. I visit the area often having lived in Monterey Peninsula for over a decade and even graduated High School from Carmel High '89. We still have friends and family in the area and that is what brings us in often. This trip was with my sister and we needed a place for the two of us. While the bathroom situation was odd (located in between the bedroom and main room) so you had to time everything a little bit the whole stay was beyond exceptional. Front desk team was great! Check in process super easy. The Office is open until 10p each night with Coffee, Tea, Water and some snacks complimentary. The room had a kitchen that was fully functional (only used the coffeemaker, refrigerator and microwave) and then my favorite part about the room was the Main room and the fireplace! I was able to wind down each night watching a little bit of TV while enjoying a wonderful fire. Location puts you in a perfect location to enjoy Carmel walking distance from everything you would ever need. I can imagine parking could be tricky but we had no issues at any time finding a spot.

Overpriced and Noisy – you should look Elsewhere in Carmel We stayed at the Wayside Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea and were extremely disappointed, especially given the price. At over $400 per night, we expected peace and comfort — the one thing most people look for on a Carmel getaway. Instead, we got early wake-up calls from garbage trucks, heavy vehicles, and relentless construction noise. Our room was right next to a loud community power station, with a ventilation system that runs — and hums — 24/7. Bring your earplugs! 🫣 The room itself was smelly and awkwardly designed. The toilet is literally on the floor, offering zero privacy — who thought that was a good idea? The furniture is dated and worn — clearly from another era, at least 25 years old. It feels tired and neglected, not charming or vintage. Yes, the location is nice, but that’s true for nearly every hotel in Carmel. For the price, this stay was absolutely NOT worth it. Do yourself a favor and look for a newer or better-maintained place to enjoy the beauty and calm that Carmel is known for.

This was a fantastic hotel. Front desk gentleman was incredibly kind and it felt cozy and homey right from the start. Don’t let the dated looking rooms fool you! Yes, it is a bit dated but it’s so charming and warm. We had a double suite with a kitchen, fireplace and living room. Beds were so comfortable. The only cons I have are the minimal amount of outlets in the room, a couple stains on walls/couch, and the neighboring units were loud at times. I want to iterate that this has no bearing on my recommendation or willingness to stay here again, I am just being critical! Location was perfect, we walked to everything in Carmel and Monterey/Monterey Airport were all less than 15 minutes away. Thank you so much for a great stay!

The rooms are much nicer than they appeared in the pictures on the website. The pictures made it seem outdated, but everything in the room was very clean and in good condition. The gas fireplace and soaking tub was a big highlight. We got a king suite and it was very spacious, it even have a table and chairs on the outside patio. The bed and pillows were extremely soft and plush. The location is very convenient for walking to restaurants for meals. We got in late our first day and the two parking lots were full so we had to street park, but after that as long as we parked before dinner, we could get a spot in the lot. The room did have air conditioning.

The only disappointment was the front desk service. They don't have any tea, despite advertising that they do. Seems like it wouldn't be that hard to stock a few tea bags. Also they only give you 3 k-cups of coffee at a time, so we had to keep asking for more coffee everyday. They told us they were only doing room service cleaning on request due to COVID which was fine with us, we didn't need it. But the cleaning staff ended up coming into our room anyways even though we hadn't requested it. We got a $50 dining voucher and the front desk lady told us to scan a QR code for the list of restaurants we could use it at, which was a huge list. The first two nights, the restaurants on the list we went to for dinner told us they didn't accept the voucher, awkward and embarrassing. Finally we went back and another person at the front desk gave us a printed list with only 6 restaurants on it. So the lady that had told us to scan the QR code didn't know what website it linked to, because the restaurant list was obviously...

More than expected!

Great location with so much to do, see, and explore, all within short walking distance. This includes great shops, wine tasting, and food.

On-site private parking was a definite plus on arrival, especially if you are familiar with the crowded and difficult touristy parking situation in this area. Our first interaction after parking was with the housekeeping staff, who were apparently doing double duty sweeping up fallen winter leaves and tidying up parking area. They warmly greeted us and helped direct us to the lobby. We were able to check in an hour early with the help of Scott at the front desk. Again, very friendly, thorough, and helpful.

We entered our second story room and we're immediately impressed by the actual size of the room and even moreso by its charm. Great lighting from the many windows and the plantation/louvered style shutters. Even a door to a small balcony to sit for an evening or morning sip of coffee.

Our room came with a cozy fireplace which only added to the overall charm and ambience of the room. And let's not forget the jetted tub, which was more than roomy enough for my wife and I.

Very clean and meticulously kept. Furnished with a small fridge, ample fresh towels and guest robes, coffee maker, glasses and mugs, and two separate vanities that worked out perfectly for my wife and I. Comfy and cozy bed and amazingly quiet considering being located amidst the surrounding hustle and bustle.

Loved our visit and highly...
