I had an extremely disappointing experience at the Village Inn in Destin, Florida.
Keep in mind, my family of four was on vacation, along with my in-laws’ family of five, who were staying a couple of rooms down. We had a total of five children with us, but only two of them are mine. We had our own rooms!
To begin with, My family and I were harassed multiple times by a guest staying next to us, whose dog barked constantly.
One time, I accidentally left my room key inside and knocked on my own door to be let in, to go to bed. The guest falsely accused me of causing a disturbance and harassed me. The following morning, she filed a complaint against me and on her way back to her room from the lobby, she harassed my in laws 10 y/o son and my mother in law got involved. To protect us from further harassment, I tried to record the guest, but I thought I had stopped recording by the time I entered the lobby.
When I approached the front desk to file my own complaint, the general manager was dismissive, unprofessional, and wouldn’t hear my side of the story. She immediately sided with the other guest without investigating and accused me of “letting my kids run around knocking on guest doors,” when in fact, the children she was referring to were not mine—they were my family staying a few rooms down. I made it clear to her that it wasn’t my children doing that—it was my in-laws’ children. And she respond “well, they’ve been in your room.”
They weren’t playing ding-dong ditch or bothering anyone, and they certainly never knocked on the complaining guest’s door. They were selling chips to make money, but even if that type of activity is against hotel rules, it wasn’t my responsibility since they aren’t my children. Instead of addressing the matter with their parents, the manager unfairly placed the blame on me.
During the interaction, the manager asked me if I was recording, and I honestly admitted that I was because I had forgotten to turn it off earlier. I tried to apologize and explain that it wasn’t intentional, but she immediately said she didn’t want to talk to me and claimed to feel “very threatened.”
I stopped recording as soon as she asked, but she still refused to accept my apology, saying “I don’t accept your apology because I don’t believe you’re really that sorry.” This was incredibly hurtful and humiliating, as I made an effort to be respectful and as cooperative as I could be despite how unfairly I was being treated.
I was treated unfairly and made to feel like I was the problem when I was just trying to stand up for myself and my family. It’s even worse when the person in charge wouldn’t listen and just assumed the worst about me… the general manager was already set on believing the other guest’s story without hearing mine out.
To avoid more conflict, we ended up switching rooms, but the lack of professionalism and empathy from the general manager made our stay way more stressful and upsetting. I would not recommend staying here due to the poor management and unfair treatment of guests.
The rooms look decent but rink of mold and some towels were filthy as soon as we got in our new room, but they exchanged them without a problem. The floor is peeling up, cobwebs in the windows. But I guess you get what you pay for. My main problem was the general manager and how she handled things.
This hotel is not family friendly, just dog friendly and better for older people...

Read moreRoom was ready for check in an hour early which was nice after a 19hr drive. Got in and there was still garbage on the floors under the couch and sand on the floors. Not a huge deal but then noticed the bathroom vent didn't work. Which I'm assuming didn't work for a while because there was mold in the corners in the bathroom all up the wall. If you want to flush the toilet you have to hold the handle down the whole time (pretty annoying). And shower with the door open or it gets way too hot and slick in there. No towel hangers in bathroom so be creative. The coffee maker was really caked up with old coffee so not really usable. Staff seemed polite and willing to help when they could. I didn't complain about any of the things while there because it was a 4 day trip the hotel was booked and it was all manageable for the time we were there but didn't really make it enjoyable. Had people fighting in the parking lot frequently. Yard work at 7am. And if you want towels you have to turn in your old ones and wait for a housekeeper to bring you some whenever they get to it or try to track them down. I had to bring all our wet towels down, did that and was told if I needed towels to go find housekeeping. Took hours to get some towels. Ended up going and spending 75 dollars on a couple towels for us to use. Half the outlets in the room didn't work as well which made things complicated. Door had obviously been kicked in before and the deadbolt re attached to the broken door frame wood. Took had a 1/4inch gap all the way so constant heat/daylight. Ac worked ok. Curtains for the from window don't cover the whole window and mirror positioning in the room let's anyone see in onto the bed as well. It's the cheapest rates for a reason. Definently would be worth the extra 50 a night or whatever to not deal with these things on vacation. Getting ice in the dirty ice bucket with no bags on the other side/story of the hotel...
