My husband and I have been touring all over Michigan this past week for our 25th anniversary and finding hotels as we go along. I found this place and was so happy when I saw it. Everything was done beautifully. The front desk girl was the sweetest and our room was honestly so homey feeling. I loved the attention to detail from the little baskets to the pink kureg to the black clothes for makeup removal. I can tell a ton of thought (by a woman) went into the design and they’re applauded!! Well done!!! Except the tv remote was not a good choice. I see where yall were coming with that and I get it, but it’s just not as functional as it should be. Having to click 500 times to get to a channel and no sleep timer? Fail But then it was time for bed :(. I’m a very hot sleeper and the AC was honestly worthless. Being that it blows out opposite of the bed and only goes down to 66! I know, most people think that is comfortable but like I said, I’m a hot sleeper. I keep my home at 64 all year. Anyway, it was soooo hot in there, I’m sure it was above the 66°. We could not sleep at all. Then I kept hearing this wind howling noise and discovered it was coming from under our door. It was so loud and annoying. I’ve never had that in a hotel before. I went and placed the blanket at the bottom of the door and it stopped. I shouldn’t have to do that. I then discovered the windows open and opened them (but it was still 67° out with 97% humidity) but I was trying to get a breeze in the room. So I left my husband on the bed and slept on the pullout couch just so I could get a breeze under the window. Finally I fell asleep around 3am and woke up at 6 and got back in the bed bc it had cooled off enough bc the temp outside dropped to about 55°. But then the light from the microwave clock and the fridge were too bright and directly in my face, so I had to cover them with towels. And then the stupid glow of that remote. I thought I was going crazy by this point. But all of this could’ve been alleviated had you had a better AC system that allowed for a lower temp control and well as the flow of the air. It should’ve been blowing towards the sleeping area. And the howling under the door? That was just so loud. It was all those things combined that the looks and the beauty of the hotel didn’t even matter. The looks of the hotel don’t help me sleep at night. So from the AC not being cool enough to the wind howling under the door (with windows closed) to the bright lights on the microwave, fridge and remote…it was a disaster for sleeping. I’m not going to touch on if the beds were comfortable or not because I do feel that’s a personal opinion. Some people say bad some say good. It’s not the hotels fault unless they’re faulty and old. They were both brand new and my opinion may not be yours. I’ll just say the beds were not the reason I couldn’t sleep. And the hot room is why it only got one star from me. Bc for me, that’s the number one important thing. Good thing my hubby is driving back down state so I can finally get sleep in the car. I wanted to love this place so much just based on esthetics alone, but I honestly would not recommend if you like cooler rooms or you don’t have your own fan. If you don’t mind a hot room, this is the hotel for you. Absolutely beautiful job on the...
Read moreOverall, we really enjoyed the space at the Alexandra Inn. The hotel is beautiful and very clean with spacious rooms. We liked the quieter location towards the end of the hotel strip and the comfy beach lounge chairs. ||However, there were certain things that stood out and ultimately led to 4 stars. This was our second stay at a lake-front hotel in Michigan. I might have gone in to this trip with overly high expectations based on a prior visit to Mackinaw City, where the hotel had tons of personal touches (ie 2 free paddleboards to borrow, low folding water chairs, s’mores kits passed out at dusk every night), incredibly friendly staff, and just an overall very warm feel to it. ||The only thing that could be considered a personal touch at the Alexandra Inn was a small plate of cookies in the lobby every night. Once again, this probably would not have stood out to me if not comparing to our prior trip. I also found every front desk staff member I interacted with to be cold/ somewhat rude. The only thing I requested from them during our 5 night stay was regarding the propane tank for the sole fire pit, as it was out of propane our second to last night. I stopped by the front desk the next morning to see if it was possible to replace before our final evening, and the staff member seemed annoyed and just said she would pass the info along. Later that afternoon it still hadn’t been replaced, so I checked in with another staff member. He suggested that I was igniting it incorrectly, despite me saying I had no trouble with it our first few nights. He then walked out to the beach to show me how to do it, only to find it was in fact out. It was eventually replaced. ||On our 2nd to last day, our room key stopped working due to an incorrect check-out date programmed in. I (very nicely) asked if it could be fixed to get in to our room. The staff member did not say anything nor look up from her computer, just took the card, fixed it, and said “here, the check out date was wrong”. This was obviously not a big deal and an easy fix, but it still just stood out when every interaction with staff essentially went the same way. ||Lastly, as a very minor note– the website photos show Adirondack chairs on the individual balconies. They actually have a high top table and 2 high top chairs, which are fine but not really the type of chair you’d want to sit in for a long time if one of your priorities is spending a lot of time on...
Read moreAt first glance this hotel seems like the perfect place to enjoy a family vacation. Its brand new, clean, and management seemed very nice. Our first morning on the property my 8 year old son was leaning on the back planters trying to reach an item his friend from the first floor balcony on the far right was giving him. The planters could not withstand his weight and ended up tipping forward and falling down (photo provided) one planter landed on my sons foot. My 17 year old daughter witnessed this and agreed that my son should not have been leaning on the planters but said she feared for his life because of the dangers of the planters. We apologized to management on 4 separate occasions, we offered to pay for labor and damages and offered our personal help to clean the mess. Another guest who is a contractor said the planters were not constructed well and deemed them very unsafe. Management opted to take down all the planters because they realized that it was a safety hazard.
After that incident the owner of the hotel turned very sour and made it obvious that we were not welcome, he proceeded to give us bad looks and made us feel unwelcome. As we were checking out my husband went to apologize for the FOURTH time. The owner then replies that our family and group of friends are never welcome and will not be allowed to stay on property again. Everything about this hotel seems like it was built with cheap material and unsafe measures from the balcony to the bathrooms and even the beds. This new establishment is up for a rude awakening. I’d like the readers to make their own conclusion and decide if this place is a good fit for their family. I will also be pursuing legal action.
Planter did not have permit, was built without safety measures in place A 70 pound child caused the whole system to fail because he was leaning on them 8 year old hurt his foot after the planter fell on it. We took responsibility and offered to help and pay, even though my son was hurt. No one apologized to us or asked if our son was ok. We are banned from the...
