A & J Ichiban is a cozy, centrally located sushi spot that offers friendly service and a decent menu for sushi lovers passing through or staying in Eureka.
What I Ordered:
Spider Rolls Tuna Rolls Edamame
Food Review: The tuna rolls stood out — fresh, clean-tasting tuna with nicely prepared rice. The spider roll, while flavorful, was a bit too heavy on the fried element for my liking; the texture overpowered the more delicate components.
The edamame unfortunately missed the mark — overcooked and soggy, lacking that crisp pop you expect.
Service & Atmosphere: What really stood out was the service — the ladies working were warm, attentive, and on top of things without being overbearing. The atmosphere is inviting, with comfortable seating for both solo diners and families.
Overall: Reasonably priced, centrally located, and backed by great service, A & J Ichiban is worth a stop if you're in town. With a bit of refinement to a few dishes, it could...
Read moreFood was great, service not so much… our waitress could have been much better. She struggled with getting orders to the correct person, which is minor. But when it came time to pay, the tags were messed up and pricing was not correct to what the menu showed. I asked her about the different prices for the same item on separate receipts and she started having attitude with me and her voice got louder and louder. She made it very clear that she didn’t understand what I was asking. I tried to explain it again and she got even louder, pulled out a calculator and got snippy with me. And told me she would take cash out of her pocket to cover the difference to make me happy. I paid with my card and she returned my receipt with a $1 bill on top, to “cover the difference” which was about $3.75 per item. It was all very uncalled for and extremely unprofessional, and especially around...
Read moreWe live out of town but visit the coast a few times a year. We've given this place a try, twice, because it has such good reviews. The positive is that the service is great, the people are super friendly and on top of things! The panko itself on the calamari is also very good, crisp and light. On the other hand, the times we've been there, our food has been less than fresh. We were hesitant to try again, but were jonesing sushi and knew right where this was without having to go search for it. The second time we were there I had something that had the spicy tuna in it. The consistency was iffy to me, but I was hungry and ate it anyway. I will never make that mistake again. That was a very, very long ride home. It's possible that we went on two separate occasions that they were having off days (about 2 ish years apart), but there won't be a "third time's a charm" try for us...
