The Golden Sand Oceanfront Hotel on Hollywood Broadwalk was a nice oceanfront getaway. On the morning of check-in, I received a call from Tony to confirm my reservation. He wanted me to scan my driver’s license and credit card to send to him by text or email since The Golden Sand does not have a front office. I told Tony that I was not comfortable with doing that. A phone call from a stranger asking for my license and credit card, ah Nope!
We agreed to meet at the property at 2 pm. He met me downstairs and offered to help me with my things, I had a lot of things. He said “no worries I’m use to carrying a lot of stuff, ‘cause I have a wife”…lol. He carried most of my luggage, beach bag, umbrella, and grocery bags. He explained that when guests arrive after hours acquiring their license and credit card via text or email is a standard operating procedure. Once at my room, I noticed that the air conditioning units were being replaced in the other units. Tony said that they acquired the property about a year ago and are in the process of making upgrades to each unit and common area. His wife Soni was cleaning out the other units and said it’s a work in progress.
Each room has a lockbox where the room key is kept. This is convenient for late arrivals and if you don’t want to take your key to the beach. Tony assured me that the combinations for the lockbox were changed with each guest. My room was an oceanfront room. I was nicely surprised when I entered the room, I did not know what to expect. You can see the unit has been renovated and is still in the process, but it was clean and inviting. The dark blue drapes against the ocean view was refreshing. The property has lounge chairs on the deck above the Broadwalk. I would have liked to sit out there on occasions but there were no lounge umbrellas. On one particular morning, as I was coming back from the beach, Soni was tending to the rooms. She called out to me by name and said, “I hope you’re having a great morning.” That made my day. Something so simple as remembering your guest’s name makes for a cozy feel, that I appreciated.
The one incident, however that did not sit too well with me was when the exterminator was wanting to enter to spray for bugs. Safety first is my motto and letting a strange person into my room who claims to be an exterminator is not safe. If I did not see (through the peephole) these two gentlemen go into the other units and leave within a minute I would not have opened my door. I did give them a very hard time before I decided to let them in. Tony, this could have been handled differently.
If you are wanting a quiet, no people around vacation spot, this is not for you. The Golden Sand is in the heart of the Hollywood Broadwalk with restaurants, lots of people having fun, and music from 11 am – 11 pm. It was great to people watch and to be steps from the beach. There were weddings and anniversaries celebrated on the beach, dancing and good times to be had by all. The hotel is close to the Margaritaville Band Shell. If you are lucky, you will be there to catch some awesome performances. The sunrises were spectacular each morning. I joined the regular boardwalk runners, walkers, riders, and exercisers on a few early morning occasions.
The Golden Sand is not the Biltmore, there are a lot of renovations that still have to be made but Tony and Soni made my stay enjoyable, and I would definitely stay...
