Im updating my review bc since my visit ive had crappy customer service twice & the checkout guy (i think his name was Chris?) At best western popped into my head both times bc of his great customer service skills...so since i cant get BWPBham out of my head..i figure its 5 stars ;-) This was actual a better than expected stay... if bedding had been provided for the extra bed it would've been 5 stars, that said, I would easily have given this hotel 5 stars just on service staff, cleanliness & convenience but there were some To their credit, the hotel was immaculately clean during our stay & was fully booked due to hurricane IRMA evacuations from Florida (we were evacuees also) I still give 4 stars bc I suspect the bedding issue was bc of the evacuations but hopefully final a few extra bedding sets will be added to inventory. The 2 women & 1 gentleman that did the breakfast service were AMAZING on service! They clearly had increased workload during the hurricane yet were cheerful & helpful to everyone. They provided tips on local spots for our family &info on restaurants my husband inquired about. All 3 went out of their way to be engaging & pleasant..which honestly made the stay more like a mini getaway & less like a nerve wracking hurricane evacuation for a family of 6. As for the room/suite, it was actually better than expected. The kitchen was better than the "kitchenette w microwave, sink & mini fridge" described. It had a full apartment sized fridge, large microwave/convection oven, sink & 2 burner cooktop(this was essential for us to be able to boil nebulizer parts for our child's cystic fibrosis care & eased a great deal of last minute worries during evacuation) & cabinets w dishes/pots. There was also a 2nd mini fridge & small microwave in the 1 bedroom area under the tv which was convenient to separate meds & such. The gentleman that did our checkout was hands down the BEST I've had on my 3 recent trips to Birmingham in 3 months. He was handling a clearly increased workload and some pretty odd guest requests but maintained a polite attitude & got us checked out in record time! One bonus for us was the view from our suite. We stayed on the backside (pool side) & on top floor... at night it was a great view lit up with the lights against the mountain view. Overall would recommend this place for a family or individual stay..the staff make it great!. I've now made the Birmingham trip 3 ways: solo getaway, summer roadtrip with just my niece & 4 kids/ teens & lastly as a family (emergency evacuation) w my husband & 4 kids. This was an overall great stay..ataff made it feel more like a getaway & everyone enjoyed themselves comfortably despite anxiety regarding the...
Read moreJust checked out of this Best Western about 25 minutes ago, and I feel like I need to write this review while it's fresh on my mind. Last minute family trip to Birmingham for a bodybuilding competition. My brother booked a suite with 2 queen beds (maybe double) kind of last minute, but Bonita at the front desk was very helpful, and was able to take care of us so the whole family could stay at the same hotel. Check-in was quick, and the lobby looked nice. We grabbed some Whataburger and ate in the lobby, which was comfortable and clean.
When we checked into our suite, we all were immediately distracted by how the room smelled, and how it looked like housekeeping hadn't been in since the last guest. Trash and wrappers on the floor, stains on the countertops, and when I pulled the covers back, there was hair, crumbs and stains on the sheets (I'll attach pictures of all of this, if it will allow me). The headboards were covered in handprints and splatters of something I didn't try to investigate further. In short, the room was very very dirty. I went to the front desk to let the agent know, and she very helpfully provided us with an alternative suite across the hall (I didn't catch her name, but she had beautiful tattoos on her left arm).
The new room smelled like cleaning supplies and fresh laundry, and we were pleased with how it appeared cleaner. I couldn't help but notice, though, that the room still felt spot cleaned. The vents on the AC were packed with dust and debris like they hadn't been cleaned in ages (pictured). The toilet had urine stains with hair, old toilet paper and debris stuck in at the base (pictured). But the kicker was the shower. I'm shocked they allowed guests to purchase a room with a shower in this condition. Ignoring all the hair in the shower, the floor of the tub appears to be damaged or very badly worn. I don't even know how to describe it other than to attach a picture. My brother's opted not to use the shower. I did, and wished I hadn't. Mostly, my visit to this hotel was regrettable, and I wish we had booked a room at one of the hotels nearby. The issue seems to be the tragic housekeeping, and no one checking rooms for quality assurance. Go elsewhere if you're a germaphobe like myself, or you'll be...
Read moreIt’s not that it wasn’t clean (after the 3rd room we moved to) and relatively updated, plentiful towels and amenities, great breakfast and pleasant staff, but there were several issues.
Windows don’t open, so I’m stuck breathing polluted air. I detest being sealed into a room!
Our experience: First room, no scent and clean, but door didn’t lock, which of course we didn’t find out until AFTER we had completely unpacked. The second room smelled strongly of cleaning fragrance in the hall, and to a lesser extent in the room. The third room had a slight wet-dog, BO smell, maybe only detectable by those who have the olfactory abilities of a bloodhound - aka myself. But at least the door locked and it was clean. The front staff were very accomodating in allowing me to choose a room that I could live in for one night😂.
Fridge and microwave in room as well.
Breakfast included instant oatmeal or grits, waffle-maker, sausage patties and pork links, hash browns, bread and bagels with a toaster, condiments and spreads, coffee, tea, milk, and an assortment of juices. Boiled eggs, and chopped boiled eggs (someone forgot to order the powdered, scrambled egg mix maybe😆). Apples, bananas, and oranges.
Unfortunately, on an auto-immune diet, none of this was available to me except the fruit, which I’m sure was not organic, but no points off for that - I wouldn’t expect it anywhere unless specifically advertised.
A little loud, we were 2 doors down from the elevator from which I could hear every « ding! ». And anyone talking in the hall felt like they were actually in my room, it was very disconcerting.
All in all, it was fine, but I would have rather stayed in a hotel where all the rooms were clean so I didn’t have to see each room myself to check for cleanliness, no funky odors and less noise. A lower star hotel with a high rating - AND AN OPENING WINDOW - would have been better and I could have saved the $50 extra dollars and bought my own...
