Last month I visited Altoona for a convention. This was my first time ever staying in a hotel and I was extremely disappointed. I paid extra for this hotel in particular rather than saving money elsewhere. When I booked through Expedia, the amenities showed this hotel would have a hot tub available; however, it was out of service when we arrived. On the Expedia website it read "Pool" and "Hot tub" separately, with only "pool" being crossed out, meaning it was out of service; however, hot tub was not crossed out, which led me to believe it was still available. When we brought this up with management, they said every single hotel has their pool and hot tub connected and that I should have ASSUMED it was not in service. I had already explained to them I have never stayed in a hotel and people should not have to assume these details. When my partner addressed this situation, he said to the Manager working (I believe Cheryl) that we deserve some sort of compensation, to which she responded "Oh yes, absolutely". We were later on denied for any amount of compensation. The manager then told us not to worry because our hotel stay came with access to a very nearby gym, The Summit Athletic Club, which had a pool and hot tub available, so we got ready to go there instead. As soon as we were about to leave, we saw the gym was closed. I find it unacceptable that we were mislead into thinking we had all of these amenities included in our stay when not one of them was available, including the gym. If the Summit Athletic Club is working in partnership with this hotel, the manager should have been aware that the gym had already closed that day rather than misleading us. To top it all off, our bathroom was outdated and rather gross. I would never consider booking with this hotel again in any state. My friends and I were all very disappointed as it...
Read moreWe were very happy with the service provided by the staff at the Hampton Inn Altoona. The woman who checked us in offered us a free upgrade to a larger suite that was available when she saw that we had three children with us. When we asked for a rollaway bed later that evening, it was delivered within five minutes. The hot breakfast was good and there were plenty of choices. Our only complaint is that the suite was in need of updating/maintenance. The room was clean. However, the pull-out sofa was very shabby and threadbare. It looked like it was more appropriate for someone's hunting camp. There was a fireplace in our suite, but the screen covering it had a hole in it. There was a large hole/worn spot on the table. The remote control for the TV was missing the battery cover and the batteries were held in with clear packing tape. The remote did not work. The television system advertised in-room movies and my kids saw a recent release they wanted to watch. After 30 minutes of trying to figure out how to get the movie, we called the front desk to be informed that the hotel no longer offered in-room movies. The staff person apologized and said she didn't know why the advertisement hadn't been pulled.
So, long story short -- service was great, but our room left a lot to be desired. I've read the previous reviews and maybe some of the other rooms in the hotel have been renovated? Ours...
