Only rated 2 stars based on interactions with the check-in desk woman who was absolutely stellar with her positive attitude and feedback about local bars and speakeasies. She should leave Memphis in her rearview as she has a lot to offer the world and it's not going to amount to anything in this town.
After driving all day and determining that we should self park (hey look a parking garage next door) we pull in and it's 25.00 for "event parking". Well we are staying at the hotel ... Not an event. Ok. Rented spot for 24 hrs, comes up as 42$.
Walk our luggage down 3 levels and past all the pot and cigarello smoking folks and get to the desk. Checked on the room location and made some adjustments. 3 desks for checking in and they all lock up whenever one of them is in use. Is this 1986?
Hotel room. Quiet actually. Except for the mini fridge that groans in protest each time the compressor comes on. Or the mini bar device? that couldn't be opened, had wires hanging out and a click-button switch that looked like it belonged in a bomb on a bus in a Keanu Reeves movie.
The TV had one mode. On, but no inputs found. The TV remote couldn't even be programmed becuase the model doesn't match any PDF user manual found anywhere on the Internet.
Breakfast: got a voucher, but grits were lumpy, breakfast potatoes were underdone, and the kitchen staff is clearly UNAWARE how to even cut up a pineapple to serve it in a fruit bowl.
Avocado toast was OK but two eggs were served at completely different levels of cook. One was very runny and one didn't run at all.
Let's talk about the area for a second. Beale Street has a vibe like a bluesy street that was really good 20 years ago, but now it stinks of litter, the bands have gone deaf, litter blowing around everywhere, cops on every corner standing by their cars but don't do anything except make sure their blue lights are still on.
The parking garage apparently becomes a spot for local idiots in straight-piped Mustangs to hit redline and try their hands at Fast and Furious Tokyo drift. Yes, you can definitely hear this from in the hotel.
If you leave the hotel, you'll find that you are in a mostly homeless, or otherwise largely abandoned city (aside from guests that certainly won't stay long). Uhauls at every other intersection selling sketchy goods, people drive like maniacs and it is clear that crime and taking the low road has won over long ago.
Batman couldn't save this town. Avoid it like the plague. It is probably contagious and now I need multiple shots for visiting it and this hotel.
Oh it gets better. Tried to cancel my follow up trip reservation in this same location (passing back through) and they won't allow it. Said no cancellation possible. Well it is a Westin which is in the family of Marriott Bonvoy hotels. So it should be possible...but not according to the staff I talked to on the phone. Marriott is going to lose a long time member over this. And hopefully more...
Read moreOk let me start out by saying that this was an overall nice visit. This hotel is nice and in great location if you are catching a concert or going to Beale St. However as I travel for my job and have a lot of experience in hotels I will say that this hotel would cost probably 75.00 less a night if it was located in a different area. First the good...the room was standard and what I expected from a hotel in this price range...comfortable bed, nice furniture and TV...etc...The bathroom was EXCELLENT and maybe the deciding factor if I come back or not. The hot water was always there and enough water pressure....there is a seperate glass shower and tub with multiple shower nozzles...The hotel staff were friendly and accomodating for the most part. Now the bad....The first thing I noticed was that I was under the impression that this room had a refrigerator which is something I always look for because I don't like always eating out when I am traveling...this room only had a refrigerator for purchased items and when I tried to take them out to make room for my stuff I ended up getting charged 180.00 extra dollars on my bill because everything in there is on pressure plates and you automatically get charged when you remove an item...To the credit of the hotel staff I was able to get these charges removed from my bill and they even brought me a refrigerator for my room. The ac/heater for this room was not up to my specs as no matter what temp I set it I would not feel comfortable for hours later and when I turned the heater on it filled the room with a burining electrical odor. Another problem I had was that the hotel staff was just not there late at night...I don't know what the hotel policy is but when I tried to call down both nights at around midnight-2AM to make wakeup calls I never got an answer and had to use my phone alarm. Also, they put guests next to us with 2 dogs that barked continually for hours our second night..I called from the room and was assured they would fix the problem but after I heard no change had to go down to the front desk myself. Let me be clear...in a situation like that I am only worried about my own comfort and could care less if the other guest gets "in trouble" or whatever else. The whole time I was assured that the guest beside me was breaking hotel policy by leaving the dogs in the room unatteneded and that they were trying to reach them to fix the problem but in my mind it seemed they were focusing on the other guest and the fact they broke the rules more than making me feel I was valued...I would have appreicated to have been moved to another floor (my entire floor sounded like a kennel from the time you got off the elevator!!!) I can't say if I will stay here again or not...I checked yes earlier and I did have an overall good experience but for the price of this hotel per night I would expect a perfect visit with no...
Read moreHorrible experience here. I would first like to say my family and I are loyal marriot customers and this hotel is NOT representative of Marriotts Standards.I know because I worked for marriot briefly and studied hospitality and hotel management in college
First of all, valet parking did not help Us unload or carry any bags in what so ever and my hands were certainly full
At check in there was a lot of confusion about our reservation and I had to fix details. We immediatly went to our room and their was a machine plugged in and running which I later learned was an ozone machine generating toxic fumes and started to make my family and I dizzy, couch, wheeze, and have tight chests. I called the front desk and they said sombody would be up. Nobody came and I went down to the desk where they informed me that they have “nothing to do with house keeping and I should to then. When I asked for the manager “she’s about to go on her break”
Finally we got moved to another room and we got downgraded from 2 queens to 1 king which I had to dispute again until we got a new room with 2 queens again. Staff was rude and unhelpful through the whole process and ignored my complaints. Basically asked me directly “what do you want for free” which is not why I needed to file a complaint
Finally after having a free dinner do to the horrible service our waitress proceeded to mess up the entire order from the entrees we ordered to the drinks to the sides as well. When I asked for a to go box after 10 minutes I went into the kitchen and got my own
When I got to my room, the mini fridge was filled with drinks that would automatically charge me if I touched them and there was no room for my food that I got from the hotels restaurant.
The next day at breakfast the food made me feel slightly sick for the rest of the day.
Later front desk pulled me aside and said they needed me to move to a different room AGAIN after 3 room transfers already do to a reservation. I immediatly declined this request and they suggested I was giving THEM attitude
If you’ve read this far you should also know this is how they were treating a PLATINUM TITANIUM member which is the highest loyalty status to marriot you can have
They offered us a mediocre 10,000 points and some free nonsense which isn’t what I wanted or needed anyhow.
The location is nearby anything you could want to do but the area is not safe and the staff is uncommunicative and does not take ownership of anything.
Unfortunately I think this says more about the city of Memphis than Marriott. But I will NEVER stay here again nor recommend this hotel though I will try me best to continue using...
