Passing Through Memphis: The Home of Music

Okay just a heads up. Beale Street was great it does remind you of a calmer Bourbon Street to a point. After a certain time of evening new regulations and restrictions kick in. Barricades are put up on the public walkway and street. Big signs that tell you no firearms allowed. No one under 21 allowed on to the public streets. You will be searched as well for weapons. You will also be required to pay $5 to enter into the public streets. This is not a lie this is not made up This is 100% correct. How do I feel about it? I noticed almost no teenagers at all. No packs of kids randomly walking and wondering. It kept a riffraff in general down due to the fact you had to pay to get into a public roadway. There were police everywhere literally everywhere. They were in battalions, paired up, horseback and patrol vehicles. You feel very safe on Beale Street. I would absolutely recommend going to Alfred's bar and grill. Fantastic entertainment. Reasonably priced food in huge portions. The food was very flavorful! Spent approximately $50 with tip for two complete meals. The place was great when it comes to ice cold air conditioning! Plenty of fans to help dissipate the cigarette smoke. Felt safe and was never bothered by any other customers while there eating. Watched an amazing performance by Garry and Elaine Wesley tribute artists.

Had to come to Beale Street while traveling though TN. I had come from Nashville a day before so had recently experienced The Honky Highway for the first time as well. Beale street had some positives and negatives in comparison. I like the seemingly slower/mellow pace. As much I like country music, the change of musical tone on Beale street(lots of live blues) was very entertaining. Not nearly as packed and bars were much more accessible. Traffic to and from my hotel was lighter as well. Beale street was definitely dirtier though. More homeless people or atleast more outgoing homeless being that I didn't get asked for money once in all of Nashville but several times within a couple hours on Beale street. Being the vibe is more mellow, Beale street didn't have the energy Honky tonk did. A lot of places closed or closed early in relation to Honky Tonk. Decent souvenirs were harder to come by on Beale street as well. Its worth the stop if you're gonna be in Memphis anyway.

The variety of bars, restaurants and stores is overwhelming. Needless to say, it is a crazy scene in the evening and during special events, such as the Liberty Bowl game. I can only assume that during warmer weather, the area is jumping. It appeared most of the bars had a window to order a drink or two and to keep walking the street. Yes, while I was there, walking the street with a cocktail in hand was permitted. The street was shut down to traffic for those types of gatherings, especially since they held a parade and the foot traffic was huge for that event. You can expect some characters here and there, but nothing that makes you feel uncomfortable or scared. Like most entertainment districts, coming with friends and family will make the experience more enjoyable and you'll have others watching out for each other. There are a few parking garages around the area, check for parking apps that support these facilities.
