The first and last time I will stay at this property. The room was clean, and slightly larger than most hotel rooms. That's the extent of what went well on this property.
I arrived just before 10PM on a Friday due to a late flight, and not having eaten. The front desk clerk offered no information voluntarily, I had to play 20 questions for basic things like "where do I park, is there a restaurant, where are the elevators to the rooms (they're around multiple corners), etc".
This hotel makes you park in a nearby garage that charges you ridiculously every single time your enter and exit, so before parking my car I asked the front desk clerk if there was any food on site. He assured me there was a restaurant/bar down a hall that was open and serving till at least 11. Taking him at his word (a mistake), I went back out and parked in the garage, a nearly empty facility that makes you go up several floors for hotel parking.
I returned to the lobby and found the restaurant/bar. There were people in there drinking and chatting, and a bartender who appeared to be keeping herself busy and very purposefully not looking up at any customer let alone those waiting to be seated. The entrance had a velvet rope across it quite strategically placed to make clear you were not welcome. As I stood for a moment patiently waiting in vain for the bartender or anyone else to acknowledge my existence, two other couples walked up and also patiently waited. The bartender continued her deliberate efforts to ignore us all.
Finally, a patron sitting in the bar looked up and said "They won't serve us food". Another, much closer to the ever-downard-looking bartender, said to her "There's people at the entrance, are y'all still serving food". The bartender's response was "We're closed, they can go."...
Going back to the front desk, the clerk didn't even offer an apology just a "Oh, guess they closed early" (it was 10:15 at this point). Again having to pull teeth for information, I learned that unlike most Marriott's with a 24/hour "Marketplace" of snack and the like that you can grab in a pinch, this one didn't have that. They did have something they called their "marketplace", but it was really a knock-off of a coffee shop that was only open select daytime hours. (breakfast is also a ridiculous charge here).
Not wanting to go pay to get my car out of the garage and drive around Metairie/New Orleans looking for late night food, I was resigned to a half empty vending machine on one of the upper floors as the only option for dinner...
In the room, the TV would let you log into Netflix but wouldn't actually play anything, getting stuck at 25%.
The showers were like a roller coaster. You'd get hot water with good water pressure for about a minute, then 30 seconds of 1/3 pressure and a drop of 15 degrees in temperature, then back to hot again. That happened consistently throughout each shower.
And finally, you are likely to get stuck in the parking garage because neither gate has a working ticket machine. It took about 15 minutes of waiting on hold for someone to answer the call button, wanting to play 20 questions as if I could share anything more than "It says 'Jam Error Call Technician'" on both units, and finally them taking all my info so they could conceivable bill me later despite my already having paid the parking at the machine in the lobby before they would let me out of the garage.
All in all, I stayed here because I normally like Marriott properties and it was convenient for the various places I needed to go while in NOLA. But the delays and inconveniences and the absolute lack of cordiality or even professionalism by the staff made this a miserable experience. I will defnitely never...
Read moreOur experience at the Marriott Hotel Metairie at Lakeway reminds me of a quote from Star Wars "This is not going to go how you think."
We came to know N'awlins for a celebration of life for a family member who passed. I looked at many hotels in the area and decided on Marriott because of the reputation they have earned over the years as a quality hotel. Also, the Marriott was four minutes away from the location we were going to for a celebration of life.
On the good side, this hotel was nice and reasonably clean. However, this hotel is a 3-star hotel with four-star hotel prices! Here are some examples of the lack of detail that I was surprised to see at the Marriott, especially when spending $294 a night.
First, we entered the room; it appeared neat and clean, and we felt relaxed and confident about our hotel choice. When we pulled back the sheets, the sheets were spotted with many small spots on the sheets. Gross!
Second, they knew three people were sharing the room, and there were only two towels. While this may seem like a small detail, this is the level of detail that I expect when staying at a 4-star hotel. Also, the coffee pot in the room was not clean. I ran water through it, and black flakes filled the cup! Wow! This coffee maker has not been checked in a long time!
Third, in many areas of the hotel, the carpet bubbled and was bubbling so much that it was a trip hazard. I almost fell over the carpet several times, and I'm very athletic and agile.
Fourth, they advertised a fitness center, tennis court, and a basketball court. Unfortunately, I never made it to the fitness center, so I can't comment about that. However, the tennis court and the basketball court are extremely run down and not maintained. On one side of the basketball court, the pole has been removed! 🏀
Finally, we appreciate that they offer a breakfast buffet and a beautiful restaurant. However, when I spend $21 per plate on a breakfast expected to be good. The scrambled eggs tasted like plastic eggs, and the options for the buffet were extremely limited. Also, when you spend $130 for dinner and three people, I expect pasta sauce not to be runny and the restaurant air temp to be comfortable. The air temp was so cold that most people were still wearing jackets and coats at dinner!
Even with all that being said, when we told them it was our son's birthday on Friday night, they did help to make his night special with the dessert options they had available. We selected the cheesecake and asked them if they could drizzle chocolate sauce on top. The waiter said he wasn't sure if they had chocolate sauce, but he would check. How would a Marriot not have chocolate sauce? He came back with a cheesecake with a chocolate sauce on it. So we appreciate that they made their best effort to make the birthday dessert special for our son's 11th birthday.🎉🧁
This carries the Marriott name, but this does not have what I expect to be the Marriott quality of a 4-star hotel.
We did have a pleasant visit, and everyone at the hotel was friendly, which goes a long way in my book. Also, we were glad to see the cafe next to the restaurant had...
