My brother and I stayed in a beautiful room upstairs at Clifton House in Natchez, Mississippi. The views of the mighty Mississippi River from the covered front porch and some of the upstairs bedroom windows and from the reception-stairs hall and from one of two downstairs salons is spectacular. The house was built in 1840, and it has been carefully preserved and updated.
Our beautiful and immaculately clean bath room measured 14 x 7 feet, and it had a beautiful off-white mosaic tiled floor, quality shower, sink and towel fixtures and a walk-in shower, about 4-1/2 feet square surrounded by clear glass on two sides and with two sliding glass doors. There is plenty of hot water and white cotton towels. Shampoo, conditioner and body cleanser are provided.
The large bed had a comfortable mattress and pillows, and there was a flat-screen television on the wall. Unfortunately we could not easily figure out how to watch any of channels.
There are some serious problems that really should be fixed by the owner:
First: There is no on-site receptionist when you check-in. You may arrive and no one is there to open the door. After you telephone a number posted on the front door, you are given a numeric code for the front door and another code for your bedroom.
Second: The entrance to Clifton House is from a narrow alley near the rear of the house. Plenty of free parking is available. It may a bit dark at night. Clifton House is not easy to find unless you have GPS.
Third: No breakfast is served on site as no person is physically present at the guesthouse to cook or serve, greet you as you check-in or check-out, or to help adjust the room temperature which is done from a remote location, or assist in getting the television to work.
Fourth: You must drive half a mile to another guest house to have your free breakfast: coffee, tea, eggs, bacon, muffin or toast with butter and marmalade. (Good, but the coffee was a bit weak and I am not used to waitresses with nose rings and tattoos.)
I met a Belgian guest living in Paris who told me he too had difficulty in finding the place. I also met a couple with children from Florence, Italy.
Clifton House needs someone on site 24 hours a day, and breakfast should be served in the beautiful dining room or on the porch overlooking the Mississippi River.
It is difficult to get the television to work, and the rooms are too cold. The Keurig coffee machine works with the capsules, but no instructions are provided so it’s trial and error. Unfortunately, the plastic containers of half and half were spoiled since they were not kept cool.
The location overlooking the river is wonderful. The rooms downstairs are all furnished with comfortable mainly antique furnishings. Overall, it’s relaxing and very quiet even if at times you might feel you’re in a ghost town with no...
Read moreWe found Clifton House to be a lovely place to stay whilst exploring this part of Mississippi. Its greatest strength is its location directly on a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, with a front porch where you can enjoy relaxing evenings watching the river and barges drift by as the sun goes down over Louisiana.||||The room we stayed in (Audubon) was large and clean, with a comfortable king bed and decent sized bathroom. Although at the upstairs rear of the property, it still had a partial view of the river.||||Our only main criticism was that, although we knew we would have to take breakfast at the Guest House B&B in central Natchez, we didn’t appreciate it would be a 1.5 mile return trip either by car or on foot. Once there the lovely Henry looked after our breakfast choices with speed and charisma. Front desk service on arrival, again at the Guest House where you need to pick up your room key, was fine and this requirement was clearly pointed out to us a couple of times in advance, so no problem.||||Our only other minor gripe was that the daily room attendant seemed averse to emptying the rubbish from the small bin in...
