If you're wondering how this small, privately owned, very reasonably-priced hotel in Manhattan ends with such a high rating, allow me to tell you!||My husband and I planned to spend two days in NYC this past week. We had tickets to see Ellis Island. We live about an hour and a half away from the city by train, so decided to arrive Monday at our leisure, spend the night, and go to Ellis Island Tuesday.||Because you board the ferry to Ellis Island from Battery Park in lower Manhattan, we wanted to be close enough so that we could get there without having to use mass transit (we love walking in NYC), so I started looking for accommodations with that in mind.||I saw Hotel Mimosa appear very high in the top rated Manhattan hotels here on Trip Advisor, and when I saw the room rate, I was quite surprised. $225 a night for a Manhattan hotel room is pretty good. I saw all the five star ratings, and started to read them. This place sounded almost too good to be true! I'm here to tell you it actually is that good. we booked directly through the hotel's website. it was quite simple to do so.||First, let me encourage you to ignore the few poor reviews from a few years ago. I'm not even sure the same folks own the hotel now, but even if they do, the hotel is unrecognizable from those reviews, like a whole different place. It has obviously been remodeled and improved and the owners really know how to deliver.||So first of all, the rooms are small, just like most hotel rooms in NYC. Most folks renting rooms in NYC are not here to hang out in the room. They're here to see NYC. That being said the rooms are spotless and large enough to be very comfortable and more than big enough for us. We had a queen bed room. So that's one queen bed, a desk, a bedside table, a chair and an ottoman, a wall mounted TV and a clothing stand/rack. There is a full bath with bathtub. ||The bed was super confortable as were the pillows. The linens were high quality, with a nice comfortor and duvet cover. The bed frame is raised, so if you were really in need of more room for luggage, they are plenty high enough to utilize the under bed area.||The furnishings seemed pretty new and were modern and utilitarian. The desk has charging ports and outlets built in, including a charging spot on top of the desk. The wifi was free and fast. The TV was a smart TV so that you could log into any of your streaming services or download the apps for those that might not already be installed. (just remember to sign out of them when you leave--which the manager reminded us to do).||The bathroom was very clean and the amenities were really nice. They even include two toothbrushes, two small tubes of toothpaste, a razor and a comb, along with big containers of body wash, shampoo and conditioner, and a wonderfully fragrant lotion. The towels were thick and fluffy. Great water pressure and plenty of hot water.||There's a nice stainless steel ice bucket and tongs--no cheap plastic. Ice machine is in the basement, along with a guest fridge (They ask you to label your refrigerated items with your checkout date) vending machines, microwave, hot water urn, and cups. Bottled water always available at the frint desk for one dollar. Grab a couple before you head out.||This is Chinatown. The hot water is for tea. (or anything that can be made with hot water). There is no coffee maker, fridge or microwave in the the rooms. When you check in, they give you three pages of things to do and places to eat nearby. One of these pages is for breakfast. I got up and walked around the corner to get hot coffee and egg sandwiches and brought them back to the room. You could always bring whatever you want and keep it in the fridge. ||I always bring a white noise machine with me to hotels because, 1) I have tinnitus and it masks it, and 2) hotels are usually just noisy enough that I don't sleep well since I'm a super light sleeper. This time I reluctantly decided not to bring it because it's heavy and I was only bringing a single backpack on the train to the city. I worried a bit about the outside noise keeping me awake because the hotel is right next to the Manhattan Bridge with cars and trains going over it all day and night.||I needn't have worried. The windows have triple layers of sound-deadening glass like hotels near airports have. Even with the trains speeding by, we barely noticed them. They sounded like they were many blocks away--and that's if we heard them at all. We didn't hear them during the night. I found this amazing, but whatever they use on the windows works. The windows also have really good blackout curtains so no light to wake you at the crack of dawn.||But there was something else. There was a type of ceiling fan that I'd never seen before. It was remote control. It had three speeds plus varying shades and intensities of light. It had an outer cover that you could control with the remote to direct the fan to and away from wherever you wanted. And it made a sound not unlike my white noise machine! Since I'm always hot at night but my husband is not, I directed that baby right at my side of the bed. Win-win! White noise and a cool breeze! (I know, I know, but these two things are really important to my comfort).||I took photos of this fan so we could order the same one for our home. ||The neighborhood is pretty cool, too. I's Chinatown! What's not to love? It's a couple of blocks from Canal Street with all the bargains to be had there. We love being immersed in the different cultures of NYC and we like to stay where we're in close proximity to the things we like to do. The neighborhood felt safe to us, lots of families with kids around on the streets, and once you step into the lobby and interact witht he staff, you feel completely secure and at home. Everyone was so above and beyond warm, welcoming and helpful. They seemed genuinely delighted we were staying with them, as if we were visiting their home. This is what's missing from the bigger hotels, I think. ||I read that this hotel is woman -owned and Asian-owned. I like that, and whoever the owners are they should be so proud of the business they've built.||When we arrived on Monday we were there hours before 4 PM check-in time and wanted to take a ferry-ride up the east river. They checked us and and though our room wasn't ready (we hadn't expected it to be--it was before noon) they kept our bags securely for us so we didn't have to lug them around and when we returned that night they had brought our bags up to our room prior to our arrival. That was nice! The next day we had to leave at 10 AM to get the 11 AM ferry to Ellis Island. Even though we checked out they kept our bags, giving us a metal numbered tag to hold onto and to give back to them any time before midnight to retrieve our bags. Those little courtesies mean so much when you're traveling.||We walked to Battery Park from the hotel since it was a beautiful day. It took 28 minutes and you walk right through the financial district. The whole walk was pleasant. There are so many things to see and do in that area of lower Manhatan. ||My husband and I both marveled at how nice this hotel was, and we plan to return there next spring for a longer stay, maybe three nights, to take in more of the activities in that very historic area. I wouldn't even try to top this place for all the reasons I've written about. We honestly hated to leave and had it not been for some other obligations we would have asked to extend this stay.||Great job by everyone associated with the Hotel Mimosa. It's truly a gem and the price can't be...
Read moreHotel Mimosa was SUCH A GREAT CHOICE for our New York City trip! I, a travel nurse and hubby have stayed in many, many hotels domestically and abroad. Prices start at a couple of hundred per night for modest accommodations in NYC. That is typical NYC. The closer you want to stay in the heart of the Big Apple, the more you can expect to spend. This is why Hotel Mimosa is simply a fantastic find. This place exceeded our expectations and was a smart choice, considering the combination of quality accommodation and service we received. This hotel was the best deal we found in New York City.
The check-in experience was seamless. The staff will even hold your baggage if you arrive earlier than check-in time. The room they provided us was VERY clean. The bed and pillows were so comfortable that it was easy to unwind every night after a long day exploring the city- and you will explore! Front desk will give you a list of places to dine, drink, and be merry. We used the kindly provided lists of restaurants within walking distance with great descriptions- making it a cinch for us to decide where to go for our meals. Mimosa is very walkable and centrally located to good, inexpensive food spots and cafes. (It is only a block away from an affordable michelin starred restaurant!). The metro station is a mere five minute walk, with a straight shot to or from JFK airport.
The fixtures in our room were well thought out, creating a reasonably spacious bed and bath. Although this hotel is directly in front of the Manhattan Bridge, we could not hear any noise at all from outside and we were able to sleep undisturbed. Hotel Mimosa provides a generous supply of added toiletries for guest convenience and their thoughtfulness did not go unnoticed. We have suffered in other hotels that have provided less while charging us more. There was no in-room fridge or microwave but there is a fridge, microwave, a snack vending machine and an ice machine at the basement level common area.
Everyone at the front desk was genuinely friendly and helpful, they even arranged a well-priced cab service to take us back to the airport for our departure. If you have any reservations I would say do not hesitate to book! We enthusiastically recommend Hotel Mimosa, and we have already re-booked with them for our next trip to New York...
Read moreOverall I'm really pleased with my stay at Hotel Mimosa. For a budget conscious traveler who is content with comfort and cleanliness over luxury, this might be a perfect stay.
The area is perfectly acceptable; I didn't have any big safety concerns, there are plenty of food and drink places around, and it's just a short walk to the metro. The train across the street gave me pause, but you can barely hear the outside world. The inside is a different story. You can definitely hear doors opening and closing. We didn't have any noise issues during our stay but with the wrong room neighbors I could see it being an issue.
The room itself is quite small, but adequate for an average guest in need a place to sleep and take a break. Air conditioning was just right, which was lucky because I didn't see anyway to adjust the temperature in the room. The bed frame was creaky (sorry lovers) but not too much of a problem once we settled in. The bed itself is a toss up; the initial bed bug check showed a bug-free but busted mattress in desperate need of replacement. That being said, there were three mattress covers to ensure sanitation and I slept like a log. The black-out curtains were very much appreciated. The real hero of that room is the waterfall shower-head After a full day of walking in the summer heat, it saved my life.
The room was listed as ADA but I have no idea why; It's barely large enough for a wheel chair; it wasn't a walk in shower; and the queen bed is against the wall, so if there are two of you someone has to crawl across/over to get into place. If you have significant mobility issues it's something to consider. The elevator was an okay size and in good working order.
The hotel's true claim to fame was the staff. Everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful. They provided recommended lists of places to eat in the area, which was great for our exhausted first day (but also do your own searches because we found some wonderful places off-list). Check in/out was a breeze, they have bottled water available for purchase at the desk, and they hung onto our bags for a couple hours between checkout and departure.
Final note, whatever you think you're paying, add 15% on top of that to cover room fees and taxes. Certainly a common occurrence in the hotel industry but...
