Quite easily the most hole in the wall place I've ever been to, but I'm glad I went. First, it was a complete NIGHTMARE to find. This entire street confused Google maps so badly because it pinpointed me as "arrived" when I was across the street, which led me to entering the wrong building and exploring the sketchy basement of THAT building instead (where I found obscure massage parlors, dimly lit winding halls, and sketchy boarded up rooms). After asking around, unnecessarily being guided through through a hidden grocery store in the back of the wrong shopping center (across the street), then exploring a different basement, I found myself on the street once more and was able to find the ACTUAL mall I was supposed to enter in the first place. Secondly, not to sugar coat things, the actual place was a complete nightmare as well. Lights flickering, boarded up abandoned shops, OPERATING shops, employees standing around like zombies, and of course.. even more sketchy winding hallways. Nevertheless, I preserved and found my way to the basement where I FINALLY found the place. The strong smell of cigarette smoke and grease/oil was intoxicating, but I really wanted to try out this alleged "best hidden gem" and I'm glad I did. The steamed buns were fantastic! There was enough filling and the buns were cooked perfectly. Though I only ordered the steamed buns, I'm sure the rest of the food would've been great. I understand why people rave about this place, I only wish it was a little easier to find (and less scary to get there). If you're a lone female, don't try to go late in the day or try to go with a friend. When I went, there was a group of guys standing out front eyeing me and it definitely didn't feel safe. Nothing happened, but always good to be aware of your surroundings and not get caught in a place you're unfamiliar with. Be safe and...
Read moreWOW!!! This was my most favorite restaurant from the time in which I lived in NYC. If you don't mind the sketchy scavenger hunt it'll take to find this place, it is ABSOLUTELY worth a visit.
When I found out how cheap their dumplings were, I knew I had to find the gusto to give this place a try. I eventually found the abandoned (and as an "urban explorer" of abandoned buildings, I do mean ABANDONED) shopping mall in which this place is located. A few sketchy characters stood by the entry door, which reeked of urine. Still, once I was inside it was game on, and into the basement I went. After a few twists and turns I found this place, where a handful of people were already busy eating.
I ordered two plates of dumplings and was so stuffed I could hardly walk. Their steamed dumplings and bao were both delicious, and I could see them being freshly made right in front of me.
The steamed dumplings were so good that I spent $30 for 60 frozen dumplings to take to work for lunch for the week! Those did not disappoint, either.
Again, I repeat, I lived in NYC and this was my most favorite restaurant, not to mention cheaper than even the cheapest hot dog cart, too!!! Forget D1n T@i Fung (which I've also been to, btw)--come here and spend ten bucks on a plate of bao and dumplings instead. They'll be just as much cheaper as they are...
Read moreWe looked for this place after wifie saw a Tik Tok on it. I swear I would otherwise never get anywhere close to this joint. First, we normally stayed on the west side of Bowery; this is on the east side. Second, this is under the bridge in the basement of an ABANDONED mall. It is really scary on our way finding it. I mean it's dumpy with most of the stores closed and barely anyone around. Definitely don't go by yourself. If you have to, go with a group of people.
Even when we finally spotted the place, I was still on the fence. Hygiene came to mind - it had to suffer to a certain extent. But since we took all the troubles getting there, we decided to at least approach it and look at the menu. That's when we saw 2 tables occupied by some decent looking people, and our mind settled a bit - maybe it is legit and we were not the only fools.
We quickly order the first item on the menu, Small Steamed Buns (6 pcs for $5.50). We got handed over a pre-packed box as soon as we handed over our cash! Since the 2 tables were occupied, we had to make room for ourselves, sitting next to a pile of boxes. This was awful.
The food itself was OK. The fillings of the buns sported an unfamiliar color that I'd associate with steamed buns. The taste was OK.
The verdict: Got our adventure for this cheap eat but...
