I actually had a pretty decent experience here. I do a LOT of research into hotels prior to trips, so perhaps my expectations were tempered a bit compared to other folks. But, let me help you understand why this should be a consideration for you.
To make it easy for you, here are the pros and cons of this place:
CONS- -The rooms are very, very small. Like a bed with a foot or so of space on all sides small. -The TV only has local channels, no cable. -Because the room is so small, it makes the noise of the air conditioner a lot more noticeable. -They tell you about a holding charge at check in, but currently my card has charges pending that are double the final cost of the booking. -I would not recommend this hotel for a family trip with kids. It lends itself to couples and single travelers best.
PROS- -This is one of the best value hotels in Manhattan. There are a limited number of options at a lower price, but they either are in a poor location, or have consistently poor reviews. This hotel is an amazing combination of low price and great location, with average to above average ratings on most sites. -The location is incredible if you are visiting NYC for the first time. I lived in Manhattan for 5 months or so, so I'm pretty familiar with most of the top items on the to do list. It is packed right next to Times Square and Broadway area, nearby is Chelsea, and Central Park is not far off either. Getting to the south areas of Manhattan is incredibly easy as well from here. -The subway station is literally across the street. A great deal of the alternatives in this price range and ratings average are 2 avenues walk away from the nearest metro station, which is a huge pain to do at the start and end of a busy day having fun in NYC. This is an incredibly convenient option. -Beds are comfortable -The room was surprisingly quiet given that the location is so central to a lot of NYC activity.
So in summary, you could absolutely spend a bit more money, and find options that don't have the cons listed here (although you may also lose a pro as well). If a big room and cable tv are important for a vacation in NYC, I suppose you and I have different priorities within a super fun city. But, if budget is at all a factor, this easily should be in your top 2-3...
Read moreFive stars all around. This is a perfect little boutique hotel right in Times Sq and it has all the cuteness and quaintness that one could ask for. The main level has entry to the hotel front desk and Garvey's Irish Pub. The pub is great and has live music every night, I think. Great little spot to hang out and listen to great artists. And when I was there, you get a voucher for a free drink for each day you stay. There are limitations on which drinks are free. But then there's the hotel. If you're lucky like me you'll be greeted by Mariana, the GM and either Alonso, Cliff or Carolina which are all super nice and were each a pleasure to chat with. Mariana upgraded myself and my brother to a King which was so helpful. The beds are incredibly comfortable and were a huge difference from the hotel we had just left from. Their frames were rickety and noisy. Every slight breath you took, the frame squeaked. Awful! But the beds here at The Shocard were like a cloud. The bathrooms had beautiful tile work and wonderfully accented with gold and silver fixtures. There was closet space to hang clothes and put clothes in drawers. Mini fridge, and other small helpful things around the room. I will say that the only thing that it was missing was a microwave. But that's not a complaint, just an observation. You're not gonna find a better price in the area. You're right next to major Broadway theaters. Idina Menzel was performing literally right next door and the crowds were there every night to take pics of her when she came out(I didn't stick around to see her - I'm too cool 😎). It was like a dream being back in NYC after 5 years. I hope to visit soon and I can't imagine staying anywhere else. I wish I had taken more pics of The Shocard, but I'll attach a couple. Great hotel. Great staff. Do yourself the favor of...
Read moreI would advise everyone to stay away from this hotel as the cleaning staff has a thief. If you choose to stay here please guard your belongings carefully. Let me explain: My fiancé and I showed up early and they said that they would give us our room an hour early. The room we received was not the size of the room we paid for but we let it go as seeing they accommodated us early. The next issue was that we came back from breakfast to find the room wide open and being cleaned. My fiancé and I have a strict no cleaning policy and ALWAYS place the tag on the door. We make purchases and as a whole do not trust people in and out with our belongs freely available. When we came in the tag was lying on the floor in the middle of our room, not somewhere it would 'just end up'. We finally communicated to the cleaning lady, her English was not very good, that we did not want the cleaning service. She then left. Before leaving, my fiancé and I got up early and showered, packed and headed out for check out. I take my engagement ring off at night because I can't sleep wearing it. After retrieving our car and driving halfway home I realized my ring was still on the night stand, where I placed it every night. Knowing for a fact, it was there because my fiancé also said he saw it there while we packed up and ALMOST said something to me. I immediately called the hotel asking for it and SURPRISE SURPRISE no one turned it in. Shocking how dishonest society is now a days. I hope that cleaning person was able to buy themselves something really nice with the $4k my ring could get them. I want them to know they caused us a lot of hurt and it broke my heart to lose that ring. I cried for two days straight. Never coming back here for...
