My husband and I booked a two-night, waterfront deluxe suite in hopes of enjoying the fresh sea air and views from the balcony in close proximity to downtown Port Townsend. As we approached the hotel, we couldn't help but notice a peculiar sight on the second floor. One of the rooms was being used as a hoarder-style floor-to-ceiling storage space for cardboard boxes. How unprofessional and unsightly! Not exactly the welcoming atmosphere one would expect from a supposedly reputable establishment. The front desk staff took unprofessionalism to a whole new level. One of the front desk staff, during every interaction, shamelessly devoured his meals while supposedly assisting guests. It was beyond disrespectful and made me question the basic principles of hospitality. Is it too much to ask for a modicum of professionalism and common courtesy? He was also speaking inappropriately to another staff member in front of us. He had his (very cute and sweet) dog in the reception area wandering around and interacting with guests. Entering our room was a mixed bag; the view is breathtaking, and the initial impression is great. But once we started settling in, it was abundantly clear that cleanliness was not a priority for this establishment. As an example, the cleaning staff had clearly neglected to remove clothing left behind by the previous guest. There were cobwebs on the walls, grime on all the floors and baseboards, urine stains and hair on the toilet. On our way back from dinner, we picked up various cleaning supplies and cleaned all surfaces so we wouldn’t have to find another room on the holiday. One should not have to question their safety and hygiene while staying at a hotel! Surprisingly, the bed and linens were spotless! We check for bedbugs and stains and found this bed to be one of the cleanest we’ve ever seen. The bed was also very comfortable. The sweeping views of the Quimper Peninsula were beautiful. There seems no better place to enjoy the sea birds, wildlife and the harbor traffic! We enjoyed walking along the rocks and beach at low tide. The location was great for this! Now, imagine booking a hotel room with the intention of sitting on the balcony, enjoying the fresh air outside, only to be met with clouds of smoke from adjacent room guests barbecuing on the patio! The noxious fumes rendered any outdoor activities impossible, leaving us trapped inside like prisoners. We brought it to the attention of the front desk agent who had no constructive response. In conclusion, our stay at The Tides was not ideal. From the sight of a room being used for storage to unprofessional staff, dirty rooms, neglected items, and a smoke-filled atmosphere, many aspects of this hotel failed to meet the most basic expectations. $300 a night was a ridiculous amount to pay for the lack of cleanliness and professionalism...
Read moreWe checked in and were excited about the location, right on the water! This is going to be great! Then we were told we were lucky enough to get the special "Officer and a Gentlemen" room, which apparently had a scene from that movie filmed in it. I don't think it has been updated since that movie was made in 1982. Not even sure it has been cleaned since then. We were told, at check in, to walk past the dumpster to get to the older building. Well the dumpster is actually right at the door to the room, and had hundreds of flies swarming all over the place! Ugh! After hurrying in to the room, I took a look, and a deep breath, and knew we were in trouble. The place stinks! Reeks of mold and heaven knows what else. I saw a sad old fan blowing air and panicked when I realized the old building has no air conditioning (something it turns out is not uncommon in Port Townsend....weird!). A glance out at the rickety deck to see the "hot tub" scared me. No way I would stand on that deck, let alone sit in that filthy, gross hot tub. We couldn't even leave the screen door open to air out the room because the screen was ripped and had huge holes (to let some of those nasty flies in!). On my way to the door (no way I was staying in this disgusting room, not for almost $200 a night!) I peeked into the tiny bathroom and spotted a scuzzy looking toilet, and a tiny, moldy shower, like, so dirty I would have to leave my shoes on to safely shower in there. Being a person who suffers with asthma and allergies, just being in there for 5 minutes was already having an affect on my breathing! We went to the desk to ask for a different room, in the newer building, and were told that was impossible. They were all booked up and couldn't move us. I thought that odd, since the "Vacancy" sign was still lit up, but maybe they only had gross old rooms left. While we were there, two others came in looking to change rooms. I have to say though, in this whole nightmare scene, the two gentlemen working the desk were very polite and tried to be helpful, calling around to local hotels trying to find us a place. They refunded our credit card charges with no penalty (which is good, because I would have threatened to call the board of health if they hadn't lol). We wound up staying just down the road at The Harborside Inn, which was lovely and clean. Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! At least until hopefully some day someone comes along and dumps some much needed money and attention in to what could be a...
Read moreI was here 3/2/19 - 3/3/19 and my experience with the property was terrible. I want to point out that the staff, from management to the cleaners were nice and helpful, I hesitated to leave any review but after giving it a thought I think in the end I may save someone a a bad experience because the property is a complete s#*t.
I planned a trip with my wife, a baby and a dog. Money wasn't an issue and the property looked really good on the pictures. We checked in to a dog friendly room and it didn't look anything like what was advertised, on top of that when trying to put baby on the bed I noticed that the comforter was full of dog hair. I immediately took if of the bed to see what the sheets were like, and they had stains on them, generally the room looked like an old cheap motel would.
My wife went to the front desk with some pictures she took in the room and she was offered a discount and they transferred us to another room, which was not dog friendly anymore (nice upgrade we thought). The room was still far from what their pictures shown, it had a kitchenette with a fridge that was literally from the 60s', when I tried to hang a towel on a bathroom towel-bar it fell off on the ground. And the patio door did not want to close after I opened it so I had to use my whole body to lift it up and shut back to the original position to be able to lock it again. On top of that we could hear everything that was happening in the corridor and I'm pretty sure our neighbors were able to hear us too, baby crying, louder conversations, the door was not soundproofed at all. The new room did not look dirty but after the first one we couldn't help but saw everything as potentially not clean.
The staff was trying do make things right I think, so that's a positive but I'm afraid the only one in my whole stay. Good intentions wont do any magic here because the property is falling apart and it needs some serious remodel. I will absolutely never come back here. I was to Port Townsend before and we've seen much better options around the town, and Tides Inn is not cheap at all so I really don't see an excuse. Shame...
