What a disappointment. With a name like “buttermilk and honey”, you know they’re going to have good chicken… but that’s about all I saw to recommend the place. Well, the staff was competent and friendly, but I don’t go to restaurants to befriend the employees.

They were out of chicken and waffles when I got there, which should’ve been a red flag; waffles can be cooked fresh in just a few minutes, and if they’re out of batter, mixing up more is also a minimal time investment. I wasn’t too put off by this, however, as they also had chicken and French toast. I love French toast, so… hey, why not?

The first issue was with the coffee. Burnt, bitter, acrid. It was only sixteen ounces, but it took six teaspoons of sugar and two of creamer before it I could get it down. For reference, I usually put two sugar and one cream in a twelve ounce coffee. I’m slowly sipping it as I write this, wishing my schedule for the day hd allowed me to wake up in time for my hotel’s middling coffee service. I’m not at all a coffee snob; this is just bad.

As I said before, the chicken is fine. Well-seasoned, very juicy, arrived to me steaming from the fryer. If you just want some chicken tenders, sure, I would recommend this place.

The “French toast”, however, was a huge disappointment. It came in small squares that were oddly bumpy on one side, oddly smooth everywhere else… it wasn’t until I started writing this review that I realized they were actually squares of bread pudding. I still would’ve been interested in trying the dish if it had said “bread pudding French toast”, but either way… it wasn’t good. French toast is supposed to be light and custard-ie in the middle, but this was just extremely dense. It’s not a even a case of them making bread pudding and then doing a French toast treatment to it… I think they just make the bread pudding with French toast flavors, and then throw it in the fryer or something.

This won’t happen to you, I’m sure, but I just thought that I should point it out: there was a cat or dog hair on my food. For a second I thought that it came from me, before remembering that I’m seven hundred miles from home and everything I’m wearing has been laundered since I last saw an animal. So. That’s worth acknowledging.

Finally, the syrup. The menu lists it as “caramel maple syrup”, which sounds pretty good! It… is not maple syrup. It could potentially be “caramel maple”-flavored pancake syrup, but whatever it is, it’s not very good.

If you like chicken tenders and the rest of what I’ve said doesn’t deter you, sure, I’d say go ahead and give Buttermilk and Honey a try… but I wouldn’t recommend coming here...

Buttermilk and Honey is absolutely amazing. You can tell the food is always fresh, not frozen, homemade, and made with love. The chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches are to die for, with a nice thick but crispy fry. The moment you walk in, there is a warmth that matches the food. Every item on the menu feels like it was made with attention, care, and a sense of pride. The chicken has a perfect golden crunch that gives way to juicy, flavorful meat inside. It is seasoned to perfection and has that home-cooked comfort quality that is hard to find elsewhere.

The tenders are thick, tender, and perfectly breaded. Each bite is consistent, with no dry patches or stringy meat, just pure fried excellence. Whether you dip them in one of their house sauces or eat them plain, they never disappoint. The breading has a satisfying texture and holds its crisp even after sitting for a few minutes. There is no sogginess, just the kind of crunch that makes you want more with every bite.

Their chicken sandwiches are just as impressive. A soft, buttery bun holds a thick piece of crispy chicken that spills over the edges. The sandwich is not overloaded with toppings, but includes just enough to complement the chicken instead of covering it up. You can tell they have thought through every detail, from the crunch of the chicken to the softness of the bun and the brightness of the pickles or slaw. It is the kind of sandwich that stays in your mind long after you finish it.

The fries are thick-cut and fried to a beautiful golden brown. They are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and lightly seasoned to bring out their flavor without overpowering the meal. They pair perfectly with the chicken and do not feel like an afterthought. These fries can stand on their own and are clearly made with the same level of care as everything else.

What makes Buttermilk and Honey stand out is its consistency. Every visit is as good as the last. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch or sitting down for dinner, the quality remains high. You can taste the freshness in every bite, and that comes from using good ingredients and doing things the right way. Nothing tastes mass-produced or like it came from a microwave. There is a handcrafted feel to every plate that makes it something special.

If you want great chicken that hits all the right notes, Buttermilk and Honey is the spot. The food is simple but thoughtful, comforting but clean, and always cooked with care. It is no surprise people keep coming back. They have mastered the basics with...

For context, I’m a traveler from NH staying in a nearby hotel. I flew in to VA today and was super hungry and noticed my hotel restaurant wasn’t open yet. I found this place online with great previous reviews so i figured I’d chime in.

I walked to the restaurant and was immediately greeted with a very welcoming tone the moment i walked in. They have “self-checkout” type registers for placing your order. I enjoy this because it allows me to browse the options at my own pace. The device was extremely easy to use and they will text you your receipt with order number and text you when it’s ready!

Onto the good stuff, THE GRUB! I tend to be a bit of a picky eater and have a few comfort foods, one of them being chicken tenders. I decided to order chicken tenders with mac n cheese as my side dish, smashville hot fries (which is a loaded fry basket), and a blueberry soda to drink.

These are without a doubt the best chicken tenders i’ve had in my whole life! I travel a lot and i try the chicken tenders everywhere i go and this place is the new champ for me. I didn’t even need my bbq sauce, the breading is just that good.

The fries were incredibly delicious, just enough sauce for taste and not too much. the fries are still nice and crispy despite all the toppings. Blown away!

The blueberry soda was fantastic as well, they had some interesting drink choices!

The mac n cheese was the only thing that didn’t impress me much but for context, i have a LOT of textural issues with cheese so i believe this is a me thing, not a reflection of the product.

10/10 SO glad i ordered with them. My entire order was only $30 which includes the tip i left!

Definitely worth the money and the time spent. It only took 15 mins to get my order and the atmosphere was a comfortable place to wait.

Before I stop rambling, hats off to the staff!! They were super attentive, task oriented, and friendly!! Great job team buttermilk +...

This is it. This is the sandwich spot I've searching for since moving to Richmond. The other locations disappoint. Pops does not. I ordered the Italian Grinder, hot. I expected to get a sub the size of a 20 oz soda. No, not at Pops. I paid $12 and what I got in return was a sizable sandwich packed with meats, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, pepperoncini, oil & vinegar. Nice and warm, the cheese was melted over the crusty bread and wrapped in 2 cuts of white deli paper to help hold it all in and all of it stuffed in a white paper bag. This hit all of my nostalgia points of a proper sandwich. The meal was so big I had to break it up into 2 sessions. For the bigger guys, you can house this thing and come out satisfied. For those with lower tolerances for portions, you can share this with another person and still come out smiling. What a wonderful concoction. I arrived at 12 and the place was packed. So if you're looking to grab a quick lunch, i strongly suggest you get there closer to 11:30 to get some kind of seating. If you're ordering take out, brace yourself as there's no real place to stand and wait, and as more people come in, it can get a little confusing. But nonetheless, great food and service. I'm absolutely going to hit this spot up more often.
