I have the immense privilege of working at a national lifestyle magazine and talking to passionate hoteliers and designers across the country. The heart of people in this business lies in hospitality: Welcoming guests into a new place, providing comfort alongside a new experience. And for most people, that first moment begins in the lobby. I can say that my time at 250 Main Hotel was one of the most painful travel experiences I’ve had.
I was visiting Rockland with my parents for a family vacation. My parents are older but still work and rarely take time off, so it is very special to take any vacation time with them. My dad booked a room at this hotel after reading positive reviews, but he made the mistake of reserving a room that was definitely too small for the three of us and didn’t ask for a cot in advance, which, on arrival, we were later told would never fit in the room anyway. At the lobby counter, we knew this was fully a user error and not the hotel, however, I have to highlight the behavior of the staff toward my family.
It is one thing to kindly say the king bed room can’t fit three people and say we have to stay somewhere else, and it’s entirely another thing to talk down at guests as if they are stupid over and over again while my parents silently listened (not talking back or being disrespectful). The worst part of my lovely family trip was listening to the manager condescendingly ask repeatedly how my dad could make this mistake and think any solution (like getting a cot) would work with the tiny size of the room. She talked down to my dad for six straight minutes, doing the most to disparage my dad's thinking instead of 1) offering a solution or 2) just getting on with issuing a refund and parting ways, before she reiterated how couldn’t help us with anything else as she had a very important Zoom meeting. The manager made it very clear that they were busy (despite no other guests in the lobby)...and hospitality was not the core of the hotel. Instead of being treated as a human who made a mistake, I felt my family was very much “othered.” This afternoon transported me right back to when I was a kid and adults talking to my dad—a smart South American immigrant with a thick accent—would default and condescend to my dad as if he was incapable and dumb. It’s not the responsibility of this hotel to do more than cancel and refund our reservation, but it is a basic human responsibility to regard people with dignity and respect. Spending valuable time–before "a very important meeting"–belittling my parents was fully unnecessary and simply weird. I will never recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a peaceful time...
Read moreMy husband and I spent our 10 year wedding anniversary here after much research and planning. We were having dinner at Primo the night of our stay and thought this would be a convenient location. When trying to book the hotel the site was slightly confusing to me about the configuration of the balcony rooms. I reached out to the hotel directly and spoke with Kayla and got it sorted out with the right room selected. She was so helpful and it was much appreciated.
The hotel itself was cute! However, I did not realize parking would be kind of far away, though the terms did state “parking in town near hotel”. I was just not expecting the distance and included pictures of the area suggested. I feel this could be difficult for folks with mobility issues. You can park right out front to unload for 15 minutes. Just something to be aware of!
The room was indeed the one I wanted (thanks Kayla)! The space was nice with room for our bags and the bed was comfortable. The linens felt cool and soft. The ac worked well but because of the high floor and bright sun, it did take a while to cool down. We appreciated the mini fridge and availability of in room coffee brought right to the door in the morning. The TV was easy to use for our streaming service log ins.
The bathroom had heated floors and offered mini soaps and high quality shampoo, conditioner and body wash. A good amount of towels were offered as well. However, I did feel as if the bathroom lacked a little in cleanliness. I did notify the staff on duty on our way out for the evening and was met with sincere apologies but there really isn’t anything else to do.
The rainfall shower felt nice, the pressure was good and the water was hot but we could not get the hand wand to work. It was also broken like it had been dropped so maybe that’s why?
Overall, the hotel was bright and safe with thoughtful amenities and...
Read more250 Main is truly a five star experience. Our harbor front room was spacious, comfortable and quiet. I love the extra special touches such as a towel warmer in the bathroom, water station in the lobby with refillable flip up top glass bottles, small wall libraries on each floor, access to rooftop deck. We sat in front of the lobby fireplace and played cribbage and just enjoyed the peaceful ambiance. I found the decor to be beautiful but also warm and welcoming. The staff are friendly and helpful - special shout out to Orlando.
After being informed of the ‘breakfast snack,’ I was quite pleasantly surprised to find fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, croissants and toppings.
Parking was the only slight glitch. There are four spaces on the street and a public lot in front of the wharf across the street. We were able to borrow the wheeled luggage rack to get everything in from the car.
We were in town for the Christmas activities and loved viewing the lobster trap tree from our room and then walking the historic district to experience the local merchants and dining. The pop up craft vendors provided special Christmas gifts for those I left at home.
I can’t...
