Johnson Sporting Goods Inc — Local services in Rockland

This is not a good review but it's a truthful one. I went into JSG last Friday to purchase a small handgun. I was asked 2 questions: Are you familiar with guns and my answer was: No. I've held one that wasn't loaded. Have you taken any gun classes? Again, no, but I plan to as soon as I have the gun (truth). The salesman refused to sell me one unless I took the classes first. He said he was "uncomfortable" selling me one. I turned and left. After researching I found there is no law stating classes first. 2 friends contacted me and told me they were not asked any questions and were sold guns. Both took their classes after, like I'd planned to. I hadn't even planned to buy any ammunition until the day before class. I did a YELP review of exactly what transpired. I called the Brunswick store today and they had no problem selling me one. When I asked them why I was discriminated against at the rockland store, the owner talked me. She said she has instructed her employees to refuse to sell to anyone they feel is not safe. I gave off no such vibe and said nothing about hurting anyone or myself. She called the store and the salesperson didn't tell the truth. He said I reiterated that I knew nothing about guns but I answered his 2 questions. I'm sure they have cameras and this was recorded so I hope some agency looking into this checks that out before it magically disappears. She supported his decision and told me I could go ahead and file complaints and sue because she's been through it before and nothing happened. I was not told why he felt I was "unsafe" and he was "uncomfortable". It's basically the " because I said so" excuse. I have filed discrimination complaints and will continue to with the agencies who protect people, even if nothing is resolved. I AM in a minority but I honestly don't know if that'd anything to do with it. I don't want the store to be closed, I certainly don't want anyone out of work, I don't want them cited or fined and I don't want money. I don't even want to do business with them. These folks run a great company with high end customer service but are also outstanding people. We work with them regularly for bottle hydro testing and life raft services. Today a local neighbor to the rockland location was unable to enter his house after coming home from the nursing home. I approached an employee to come help me get the man into his home as I was unable to do so alone. They gladly helped a local man in need and showed what a huge contribution they are to the local community. We will gladly continue to spend our money with such an outstanding team of individuals.
