⭐️⭐️ (2 stars) We were excited to try this new location in St. Ignace because we’ve been big fans of the original Kingston Kitchen on Mackinac Island. We've eaten there multiple times and had great experiences.
This visit started off well — the waiter was extremely friendly and goofy, and our three-year-old really liked him. My wife ordered the fish, our son got the pizza, and I ordered the fried chicken with rice and beans and plantains.
The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The fish looked good, though the vegetables on the plate were clearly past their prime. The pizza was hot and our son enjoyed it. The chicken I had was very tasty, but the rice, beans, and plantains were the issue.
Coming from a Dominican family and as someone who owns a restaurant myself, I cook rice, beans, and plantains regularly. I could tell right away that these sides had been sitting in a warmer for too long. The rice and beans had that dried-out, over-warmed texture and taste, and the plantains were hard — a clear sign they’d been left sitting too long after frying.
When I mentioned this to the waiter, he came back and told me the manager said everything was cooked fresh that morning and there was "nothing wrong with it." But ServeSafe guidelines are clear: food cannot sit in warmers all day long. By 9:00 PM, these items are no longer safe to serve. (We ate dinner at 8:30pm) so roughly if what they said is true that food was sitting in warmers at least 11 hours before it was served to me.( remember this is what the manager told the worker)
It’s frustrating that the staff didn’t seem to care or take the concern seriously. I wasn’t being unreasonable — I was pointing out a legitimate food safety issue.
Bottom line: the atmosphere and service were pleasant, but the disregard for food quality and safety is concerning. Eat here at...
Read moreWe were pleased to find this Jamaican restaurant. Our only regret is we found it on our last full day. Otherwise, we would definitely have made another visit. We sat on the patio, which afforded a lovely water view, and is also dog friendly! This was a huge bonus, as this seemed to be an issue at other outdoor eating restaurants in St. Ignace. The staff was warm and welcoming. I am celiac, so required gluten free items. The waiter checked with the kitchen and provided my options. The kitchen seemed familiar with gluten-free protocol. Unfortunately, because of a shared fryer, they warned me that the plantains were off limits for me. However, my husband said they were very good. The food was excellent. I had jerk chicken, and my husband had jerk pork. Both were very, very flavorful. They are a bit spicy (as jerk should be), but not overly so. Both are oven baked, versus grilled, and the portions were very generous. The rice and beans were also very nice. I also had a rum drink, which was very generous on the rum, very yummy! We highly recommend and are looking forward to coming again our next stop...
Read moreKingston kitchen on mackinaw island is a better place to eat than here. The waitor was great .When we got the food it seemed immediate that the rice and peas were old and or sat in warmer too long. The goat was fresh (waitor claimed it’s not made to taste since every race dont eat spicy foods but it’s a Jamaican restaurant and that’s the point, so why change it to suit others?).I had the jerk pork and there was nothing jerk about it,it taste no different that buying meat at Walmart and going home and cooking it in vain(it was dry and tough).I was surprised my children and wife didn’t finish their oxtail,I didn’t try it,they just said it didn’t taste good.It was also my daughters birthday and we had a “small”cake and they said we couldn’t eat it there after dinner and we had to buy their cake or pay them to eat it there, keep in mind our bill past 200 usd and they behaved like that. The team claimed that the owner was stuck in his way but you don’t get more business by being an jerk.I wouldn’t recommend eating here you will be eating your money. Finally my wife threw up here 1/2 ate oxtail...
