Found this in my drafts. We went to St. Ignace recently. We visited the Wawatam Lighthouse. This is an automated, modern lighthouse that guards the harbor of St. Ignace, Michigan, in the Straits of Mackinac.

I was a little surprised on our vacation through the UP that most lighthouses are far more inaccessible than this one. Some we encountered you'd have to take a boat out to, or hike a couple miles. So this one was quite nice, being able to park and walk out to it in under 5 minutes. The park itself has a small splash pad and a sundial clock that was off by an hour (maybe the batteries died?).

We accessed the lighthouse through the Huron Boardwalk right next to the Wawatam Park. The park has beautiful flowers, benches, sundial and a bell to ring. The lighthouse is very photogenic and does not take a bad picture. It is still a working lighthouse. Large parking lots near and less than 3/10 mile walk to the lighthouse. Definitely worth a stop of your in the area.

Our recent visit was a return visit from a couple years ago. Still a great place to walk around with some amazing history, but this year the engine was missing from the tracks and some of the pictures are getting brittle and/or fading from the sunlight. This park presents an important part of our history to the next generations. I hope there is funding to bring the rail car back and re-generate the...
