We choose to stay at Hilton/Hampton over other hotels, as we generally have a great experience. This entire visit was really disappointing almost from the moment I got there. I did digital check in so that could get the room across from my best friend, I got an alert telling me I needed to go to the front desk and the gal told me it was because I’m a blue card member which made no sense. They put us in Room 413, and when I told my best friend that, she told me that they were also put in that room earlier in the week and to check if the toilet flushed because that had to change rooms because of this. It was after 10 and therefore we decided to deal with it in the morning. I went down at 6:39am to tell them about this situation, and after explaining the situation, the front desk guy told me that he could give me a plunger and that he couldn’t leave the desk. I explained that it was not a clog problem but that it was literally not flushing, and that my best friend had been in that room and had to be moved so I didn’t know if I needed to be moved and before I could even finish speaking, he just told me, “well I don’t have another room to put you in so..” he said his manager was gonna be there at 7 and that he could help us. We went down at 7:30 to talk to the manager and he was still not there, so then my husband went down at 8 and finally talked to the manager. The manager said he would have a room in about an hour and that he would comp one night, which he did. So an hour passed and we hadn’t heard anything so I waited a little longer and went down at 9:30 and explained that I was checking on the timing and he said “LikeI told your husband, I cant guarantee a time”. I explained that at this point, it has been almost 12 hours without a toilet, and that we needed to get something figured out. We finally got moved to our room around 10:00 and the room we got moved to, 301, the bathroom light over the sink did not work and the door to the shower opened the wrong way, so it made a huge mess trying to turn the water on. The three towels and two washcloths weren’t enough to shower daily. There were stains on one of the pillows visible through the pillowcase. We had to use the bathrooms down in the lobby in the interim, the men’s bathroom did not have a soap dispenser and the women’s bathroom had a soap dispenser but no soap and the sink did not work. Not sure how that’s acceptable, ESPECIALLY right now with COVID. I understand and expected that the breakfast was limited due to COVID, however the coffee was gone by 7:30, the orange juice and things were left out far past lunch time, and the overall lobby and table area were not remotely clean. The hot tub was non-functioning, the pool was freezing and again, the bathrooms adjacent to the pool, were the same ones that had no soap. There was food in the corner of the elevators for the duration of our stay and trash lined the hallway on our floor. The meeting room was nice, which was why we ended up staying at the hotel instead of going elsewhere, as that’s where our event was held. The only reason for the three stars was because for the most part, the staff was great and friendly, and that was much appreciated. If this was my first time at a Hampton, I probably would avoid them in the future altogether, however with my past experiences, I know this is...
Read moreMy favorite aunt had recently kicked her oxygen addiction, so I drove out to San Antonio from Orlando, Florida with my Mom. Having got into town after an 18 hour drive, I was fairly tired. So I dropped my Mom off at my Uncle's house, and headed to the hotel. I barely remember checking in. Thankfully my brother had secured the room, in advance, so I didn't have to do any searching. After a nap, some family feels down memory lane, and some government level Google Maps navigation (SERIOUSLY GOOGLE! Who tells someone to drive over the side of a 20ft highway bridge to get to their destination!), I returned to try and get some sleep.
I failed miserably. Apparently this hotel's beds are so comfortable that after 18 hours of driving, a 2 hour nap was enough to refresh me for 3 hours of sad memories, and then some. We got back to the room around 11PM, and I wasn't even tired, but I was definitely hungry.
Wouldn't you know the hotel has coolers with boxed dinners in them? I went to buy one, and started to talk to Travis, the stand-in night clerk, since the normal guy was away in Germany, or some place like that. Ended up talking to him for 3 hours. He was funny, personable, and friendly. Finally I said my goodnight, ate, and got another nap.
I woke up, about 7, and went down to get some of the continental breakfast for my Mom and I. The food was good. Not amazing, but it definitely served it's purpose.
We spent the day with my aunt, at her viewing. She was a really good listener. Even better now. When we got back to the hotel there was the afternoon clerk, Katie, attending to some guests. She's got a pretty good head on her shoulders, and was very professional and courteous. She'd make an amazing manager. I talked to her for a bit, but some customers came in and saved her from me. I could tell she was falling in love with me. What can I say? I'm that guy you just can't forget about.
I spent another 3 hours talking to Travis that night, respectfully retreating to the guest lobby when other guests came to check in. I didn't want them to think I was applying for a job, or something.
After getting a full night's sleep I retrieved our breakfast, again. This time I decided to try the waffle maker. I've never used a waffle maker before. It showed. I must have looked pretty ridiculous, because I got some pretty weird looks from other guests. A member of the kitchen staff came to my rescue, and showed me how to operate it. The waffles came out perfectly, and I didn't have to replace another appliance... again... My local Fire Station knows me by name...
We spent our last day in San Antonio at the funeral of the most important lady in Texas. The Sherriff's deputies even controlled traffic for our procession. When we returned to the hotel, I thanked Katie for her exemplary service. I kept it brief, because I could see the tears in her eyes. She'll eventually get over me, though I know she'll never forget me. I sincerely feel for the guy she settles down with, having to play second fiddle and all...
After a nap, Travis checked us out. It was quick and painless, unlike the 22 hour trip I was just beginning... Traffic was much worse driving back home...
I would definitely...
Read moreI have always viewed Hampton Inn as more upscale than other options that are usually available (Home2 Suites, Days Inn, Sleep Inn, Super 8, Holiday Inn). My experience this trip puts them more on the same level.
When we went to the pool to swim, there were no towels one day. Another day there were barely enough for our family; so if another family came, they wouldn’t have any towels. On the day when there were no towels, I went to the front desk and was told that she would have to do laundry, so it would be a while before towels were available. Shouldn’t they have been on top of this already?
A minor problem I noticed is that there were no heat shields for the coffee cups in the room, though they had them in the lobby for the coffee there.
Speaking of coffee, one morning when I went to breakfast, there was no container for the light blend of coffee. A gentleman working there commented that they would have it out shortly, but he said the dark blend was just freshly filled. I decided to try the dark blend. When I did, it just came out as a grounds and only a tiny bit of liquid. When I brought it to his attention, he said that it must be clogged up and he would have to clean it out. It just seemed like they didn’t have their act together on so many of the little things that make a stay enjoyable.
The first couple of days at breakfast, they had fresh fruit (apples, bananas, and oranges), but on the third morning there was not one piece of fruit. Another day, the yogurt selection only had lite yogurt.
A problem I noticed continually was that the floor was wet in the elevator and in the hallway. I’m presuming that this was either because of people not having towels at the pool or not drying themselves off; regardless, it seems like the hotel would be able to dry the floor periodically. If it was just one time, I could understand that maybe they missed it, but it was a continual problem over the course of our three night stay. Every single time we went up or down the elevator, water was standing in the elevator floor and hallway.
Other than these problems, the rate was better than what we normally get at Hampton, and overall it was a good value for that price. Again, it just puts them down on the level with Home2 Suites, Comfort Inn, and others where you pay less and expect less.
The pool wasn’t anything special. There’s no hot tub. The pool worked well for our children because it was very shallow. It wasn’t warm, but it also wasn’t freezing.
Everything else was what you would expect (i.e., very good or adequate). I would stay here again for the same rate rather than a Days Inn or a Best Western, but if I got a comparable rate at something like Fairfield, I...
