My wife and I were visiting San Antonio for the Christmas/New Year holiday and initially stopped by the Saltgrass at Huebner Oaks on Christmas Eve. We didn't have a reservation and the place was too busy to wait so we decided to return at a later date to try it out. We made a reservation and returned on the 27th. The place was jammed and we waited maybe 15 minutes to be seated. We were placed in a booth but seating in the booth was a bit tight, so we were relocated to an area of the restaurant that hadn't yet filled up with diners. So far, all was good and we looked through our menus to find something right for each of us. And then we waited, and waited, and waited. After nearly 10 minutes, a server finally came to our table. Her name was Sam C, and when she discovered it was our first time at a Saltgrass restaurant, she dove into what sounded like a memorized speech of the history of the place and her recommended menu choices. Despite me having hearing aids, I could barely hear her above the background noise. Another seven minutes went by as we waited for our drinks to arrive. When she returned with our drinks, she had a bread loaf with her. I had ordered a steak so my appetizer came out before anything else. After another lengthy delay, our entrees arrived. Mine arrived exactly as I had ordered it, with correct add-ons and served with every item in a separate plate for weighing purposes. My wife's meal was not exactly as she ordered, with the cheese missing from her Hillsdale Salad. Both our meals were incredibly delicious, but we found the server less than attentive. My entire meal had been eaten before the server returned to the table to ask whether we wanted drink refills, and when it was time to pay the bill, there was at least a six or seven minute delay from the time I gave the server my credit card to the time she returned it and requested a signature. We were both disappointed with our service and our small tip reflected our displeasure. Went here on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm 11/2/24 and expected a wait but it was surprisingly not busy, unfortunately we did still wait over 10minutes to not only be seated but even acknowledged while we saw servers chatting. Our server was.. distant and overall unfriendly. During our time there she did spill a drink over another guest and so we thought that was possibly affecting her attitude though we still continued to get glares and eye rolls the entire time. We said our hellos and please and thank yous as we have always done yet she stayed the same. Our food and drinks did arrive promptly but we never saw our server after the items were very quickly dropped off with no words and then she never came by again until the next items, no check ins or refills etc. We waited for our to go boxes for 20 minutes and asked her three times and a manager once. It was... odd. There was a large table being served at one point so I can understand a wait but there was our server taking care of that table aswell as 2 seemingly managers close by/helping her, one of whom we asked for boxes and we received a not so nice laugh and a sure then never saw her again except to slowly walk around the area. As I said above our server never came by to check in only drop off items and didn't stick around and so during the long wait for our boxes she finally came and boxed the items up, again silently we were then handed the bill. Not asked if we wanted to order more or asked about dessert just our boxes from our mains and the bill which we hadn't asked for. Everyone we interacted with from the hostess who seated us to our server and the manager just seemed unfriendly. A different manager who served us our mains was the only person who asked us if we wanted anymore bread or sauces etc and actually spoke to us. The food was presented nicely but our steaks were only just warm and our mac and cheese dried or rather had congealed into glue almost. I usually like to go to this restaurant for their steaks, soups, salad and service, but last night (Friday, February 8, 2019) is the last time I will ever waste my time at this restaurant.
My wife and I went with a couple of friends and we ordered the salad and chicken tortilla soup. My friends ordered a steak and split it between themselves. All of us ordered alcoholic beverages. The beverages were good. And we received our salads right away and our guests received their steaks right away. So we begun to wait for our soup. New customers arrived and left and finally I had to ask the server where is our soup? He went to the back and finally came back and said that they told him they had ran out of soup. He then said they were making a new batch of soup. I told him I wanted to talk to the manager as we had been waiting for 2 hours for our soup. The manager agreed they had run out of soup and were making a new batch and as we were talking the soup arrived but it was potato soup, the wrong soup. I told them that we lost our appetite and for they to take their soup back. I told the manager that I couldn't believe the lousy service we had received. They embarrassed me in front of my guests. I had to tell this manager I was not happy! At that point they asked what they could do to keep us happy. I told them to not charge my guests for their steak meal, our salads and our bar drinks. The manager agreed but then he came back and said we would have to pay for the bar drinks. I went ahead and paid $38.43 for the bar drinks and for an embarrassing evening. I cannot believe, they couldn't accommodate us with chicken tortilla soup in a timely manner. I will never go there again!
If you are thinking of taking guests to this restaurant for Valentines Day or any other social event, consider going somewhere else.
I really want a credit of $38.43 on my account but this place was only interested in selling bar drinks. If the management wish to make amends, please respond to this message. Upon satisfaction, I will take this message off of the rating and review...
