Everyone here was super friendly! The staff were very warm and welcoming and did what they could to ensure we were comfortable. The vibe of the hostel is really awesome too! It's bright, colorful, full of interesting things to peruse, the common rooms are comfortable and very welcoming, and the staff were really amazing. There's tons of informational books and pamphlets provided for those looking to learn more about the city, and if you like the social aspect of a hostel the common room makes it really easy to vibe with the other guests.
I wound up arriving WAY early by mistake (like, 10:00AM early), because I hadn't looked to see what time check-in was. The gentleman at the counter let me know that check-in was usually 3:00PM, but he went out of his way to make sure my room was ready to go, and I was checked in and cozy by 10:30ish.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, the beds are super cozy, the WiFi is fast, and the breakfast options are amazing. The hostel is fairly active during the day, but has mandated quiet hours at night - if noise is a concern when you stay somewhere, the Adelaide very quiet and peaceful, and there's no noise transference from the other rooms. I slept really well!
Admittedly my favorite part was the cable options in the room I had; the private room had a nice, up-to-date TV with Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and a bunch of other streaming options provided at no extra cost. It was really nice for late at night when you want to unwind before bed. While the rooms don't have AC (at least that I could see) they stayed very cool and comfortable and it was easy to warm them up as the room had a built-in steam heater, which was really cool.
One last thing I think really sold the whole experience was that I accidentally left behind a really important piece of jewelry to me. Housekeeping found it and I received a call from the hotel letting me know that my necklace was safe, and they were sending it back to me at no charge. I know it's a small, silly thing, but it really meant a lot that they went out of their way to keep it safe and to make sure I knew they'd located it and they were going to get it back home with me. This is definitely a great place to stay, and if I'm back in SF I'll be...
Read moreThe hostel itself was not so bad, although it needs some renovation, but the people there clearly have an attitude problem. I got a phone call at around 1 am, and because it clearly says quiet area between 11pm-7am I decided to take the call outside the hostel. A few seconds later the lady at the front desk comes out to me and starts shouting you can't talk over phone here in the alley or anywhere around the hostel, and that I can only talk at least one or two blocks from the hostel down the street. She added if you don't do that or if the cameras catch you around on the phone, you will have to leave the hostel immediately with no refund for the rest of your stay and thats what you signed for when you came here. After I finished my call and came back she did show me the paper that I signed and it did say so. I told her that no one pointed it out to me when I signed in and there was no sign on the outside that says it is a quite area, plus it was clear that I had the intention of following the rules since I left the lobby and went outside to take the call in pajamas! She still had an attitude and was like these are the rules and if you do this again we will kick you out! Whats really frustrating is that I talked to the manager/owner the following day about the incident and the lady's attitude, all he said was yes she was right you shouldn't have talked over the phone in the alley! And then he added that I could have taken the call in the area between the lobby and the entrance. The location of the hostel is right next to the ''not so safe'' Tenderloin. I had to walk around at 1am to take a phone call because the lady at the front desk had an attitude and didn't bother to inform me that I can take the call inside.
I have been to so many hostels as I travel a lot. I definitely wouldn't recommend this hostel! There are other hostels around, maybe a little bit more expensive but at least you'd get...
Read moreSo I traveled up from Los Angeles and needed a place to stay last minute and found that there was not any airbnb left under like $40 so looked and found this place. I made the reservation on their personal website (didn't see it on hostelworld) and for $31.00 for a ten bed mixed dorm ($31.31 with fees) I figured why not. The place is in a little alley off Taylor with no arrow pointing that way. The front desk staff was pretty cool. They handed me.my room key, wifi password and mentioned when checkout was and let me go. The lounge up stairs has a lot of comfy looking couches and they were all taken pretty much. There are three computers to use across from reception and you can print but it is $0.50 a page. I guess the two mixed rooms are both down stairs by that kitchen as I stayed in one and there was another room next to it. The beds are numbered and you are assigned when you get here, was lucky to have a bottom. There are lockers under the beds and there was a set of 6 outside the door for use and like any hostel they recommend using them with locks so you don't loose anything. The kitchen had everything needed to cook and there was one shelf of free stuff (food condiments) for communal use in the fridge and a free stuff cupboard as well. Also there was teas, cocoa mix and kettles for anyone to take and use. The beds had privacy curtains, plugs and lamps. The linen was provided and if you need a towel you can rent one for $1 at the front. All and all not a bad experience. There was a heavy snoring person in my room. Was a little surprised that they are welcome to travelers under the age of 18 (there was two different groups) but again it is a place to stay. Oh and there are a bunch of curated events put non by the hostel and they are happy to help you book a tour while you are around.
*I hope one day they refurb the stairs. They seemed very worn in...
