While I'd love to give this place a complete 5 stars, I cannot due to the quality of their breakfast burritos plummeting in the last month or 2. I've gotten a burrito 3 times, and every time, while the ingredients were generally good, I'd swear they have a dog or a horse assembling these things back there
The hot sauce provided was, generously, about 10-30% full. Previously I never had to ration it, but I'm 3/3 this month with mostly empty hot sauce. One container i swear had just the essence of hotsauce (a splattering, 0 mm of depth at the bottom).
The burrito was cut in half before wrapping it up, this happened 2/3 times in the last month that I ordered. I start unwrapping one end and it falls in half :| once the burrito is cut in half, it is no longer appropriate to wrap and send for takeout. People unwrap a single end and start eating from said end you see. If after a few bites it suddenly falls in half, spilling sauce everywhere, now the customer is left with half a burrito deconstructed all over their lap or table; either way, you've possibly cost a customer to save a few bucks.
Potatoes are not cooked. They're so firm I'd swear they were raw. This is probably the most egregious part. Raw/undercooked potatoes in a burrito? Feels like I'm trying to bite off a piece of bar soap. Absolutely insane, cook the potatoes. 2/3 times
Generally horrible wrapping job, leaking sauce everywhere, 3/3 times
5.massively too much egg, way more than they used to use. 2/3 times
Honestly, when done right, they have the best breakfast burritos I've personally had in my life. That's what makes it so appalling that the quality of the preparation makes this product a coin toss. Could be incredible if they'd just consistently cook the potatoes, assemble the burritos neatly, and with consistent proportions, and actually give me a filled container of hot sauce with it. I mean, when you start charging 17$ for a burrito, the least we could do is prepare it consistently.
I will probably try the burrito again in a month or 2 since I have historically enjoyed it quite a bit, but I feel that someone (a GM perhaps, if I were a gambler) is dropping the ball on taking responsibility for the consistent quality...
Read moreHeist is one of my go to spots for “brunch” (otherwise known as “one of those restaurants I can go to and order food typical of lunch without feeling weird about it or having to wait till noon for”). 😂
I went to Heist early in the day, so I did not have to wait too long to be seated. It may be a little difficult to eat here if you are with a large party as this establishment is not very large. Plus, it is pretty popular so you may find yourself waiting outside for quite a bit.
When seated, I ordered their Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Granola, and Cochata.
The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is quite solid. While the menu says it is spicy, it is a pretty mild spice. That is, unless you have a spice intolerance. I think what makes the dish stand out is the pickled slaw. So, I would recommend you not subbing anything out. I for one, would not have minded if they added more.
The Granola, which is another item on their menu, was my favorite. Served with Straus yogurt, fruit, granola and honey the dish was not too sweet and was well balanced.
The Cochata, is a horchata (which typically consists of rice water, cinnamon, vanilla extract, milk) topped with cold brew coffee and is a tad on the sweet side.
I do want to add a final note. While you should be fine for the most part, Heist is located pretty close to the Tenderloin, which is somewhat notorious for being a rougher part of SF. While there are organizations like Urban Alchemy, who hire volunteers to keep the area safer, I would still recommend for you to take an Uber to this restaurant. Especially, if you are unfamiliar...

We ordered two of their breakfast burritos. The tortillas are thin, with a little pan added crispiness and hold together brilliantly. The eggs are cooked to perfection and the meat, cheese and avocado create an award winning combination. The hot sauce sneaks up on you (it's on the side, so don't worry about it). Overall a solid 9/10!
The head scratcher is the potato. Crispy outside, tender inside. A great breakfast potato...if it wasn't half a potato stuffed inside your burrito. They are making a statement here, like pull this potato out of your burrito and eat it with a knife separately. It just doesn't fit.
Three not as positive thoughts.
First, they absolutely mean no outside drinks. We usually grab a coffee somewhere in town and then grab breakfast somewhere else. This is almost never an issue. Here it was. They had us leave our drinks outside. No big deal, just be aware.
Secondly, when they picked up our finished plates, they set down a stack of other people's dirty plates on our table. Not cool. This alone almost makes me forget how great their food was...
And thirdly, their credit card system has the added tip options that start at 20%. I like hitting a button and that option makes things easier and smoother. But give me the 15% option as a minimum, please. Just my personal opinion.
Hit and miss. ...
