We stayed around the beginning of this year and had a not-so-great experience despite wanting to like it. I’ll start by saying that our first receptionist (I think Ryan?) is super friendly and great! Her spirit made our trip a bit better. Unfortunately, we only had her for the first day.
The main complaint was that the radiator seemed to be broken and would not shut off, so during the cold winter night it was soooo unpleasantly hot in the room. I’m from Texas and this was much worse than having a broken AC during a summer night.
We asked for another room, but they said that they had nothing available. It seemed to be a known problem because I saw at least one review previously mention the same problem, so I wish that they would’ve told us earlier so that we could look for another hotel room before it was too late. They instead suggested that we kept the windows open with the fan on… That only led to many mosquitoes (despite being during the winter) to torment us in a sweaty, hot room. Funny enough, the radiator suddenly decided to stop around 5:00AM.
We ended up with very little sleep and feeling very defeated during our stay. I would say it was not fair to fully pay for a stay when the room was not habitable. The only redeeming factors were the cat and our first receptionist was super nice.
For our second receptionist, I wish we got better service like what we had from the first one. She did not bother to ask about our stay and was unbothered when we mentioned the issue. She helped us with the luggage hold service, which at first was nice until it became inconvenient. Later, we returned a few minutes before it was time for new guests to check-in. There was a sign on the door indicating that the receptionist would be out for a few minutes on break. We decided to wait and not disturb her break. Well, we waited twice as long as indicated on the sign with nobody coming back, so we called her number and this whole time she was down the street, walking with her eyes glued on her phone. No...
Read moreThis has to be my most favorite hotel that I have ever stayed in. It’s an adorable hotel. I booked this hotel when it was a holiday season, so we stayed the night for $99. We went to the San Francisco Giants game the night we stayed at the hotel. We walked to the stadium. What we loved about this hotel was we could walk anywhere. We walked all the way China town and then walked over to North Beach. My husband and I loved the hotel! There is parking garage across the street from the hotel. The service at the hotel was great. The free Continental breakfast we got the next day over at the other hotel was super yummy. The hotel was clean. There are shared bathrooms. They were clean. The hotel was quaint and decorated so lovely with all the antique photos on the wall. Our favorite part of the hotel was Skittles the cat. She came up to us many times and probably sensed we had cats. She was so sweet and so funny. She came and slept in our chair in our bedroom while my husband was taking a nap.The next day, she greeted us with a goodbye. I highly recommend this hotel. It’s got so much history and it’s just a beautiful little hotel to stay at. The reason why we stayed at the hotel was because it was our anniversary. I wanted to surprise my husband. He loved the entire mini trip to San Francisco that I had planned. Also, the hotel is in a nice part of San Francisco. We felt safe and the streets were clean. It’s a great hotel and for sure. You can do alot of walking to many different places around the city. When the Golden Gate hotel had a hotel deal, take it. The hotel was worth the price! Thank you Golden Gate Hotel!!! I will definitely want to stay their...
Read moreFeeling the need to write a review since i read quite everything in the others ones.
I stayed one week in here (room 301, private bathroom) and it went quite great.
It is indeed an old hotel - as the building is from 1913 - but everything in it is clean and well kept.
Now keep it minds it's not one of those hotel with modern facilities which all looks the same. This one as its own atmosphere, which i actually liked.
It is conveniently located near a cable car and not very far from Powell station if you arrive with a Bart train from the airport.
Also, sf have a great transportation system (i advice buying a several days tickets and using the app Citymapper - that's a great combo. Helped me to visit everything easily).
Service is also great. Everyone working there were helpful and nice. Special thanks to the lady who spoke to us on french and to the one who check me out.
Some people complained about the noise. It didn't disturbed me. It's a city so expect some noise but nothing that terrible. I sure slept all my night perfectly and the 301 is street facing.
What else to say... Be sure to check if your room have a private bathroom otherwise it will be shared with others. I did checked by phoning and had a clear answer.
Breakfast ! It's made of coffee, tea, croissant and muffin. Quite tasty. Please note the lobby is quite small so be sure to be early if you expect to leave early to explore the city.
At last, a special word about Skittles, the cat. I'm going to miss being greeted by Skittles for sure. She (or he?) Is an awesome addition to the team (and contrary to one of the previous comment i saw, let me tell that there is no odor in the...
