Never had a problem when we stay here. On our most recent stay, it looks like they're doing a good job at renovating the place. Renovating such small rooms isn't easy, but they're doing it. A true San Francisco, old timey feel in the lobby and an older elevator, but our newly renovated room was nice and comfy. Some people might feel claustrophobic in the elevator, because it's small and old, but the stairs aren't any better. The stairs have tiny steps and it spirals in this tiny space. I'd be afraid to slip and fall on my face. But hey! Just take the elevator!
I was a little worried that they were acquired by Best Western, but it looks like they've kept the best staff and made the rooms a little more modern and use the space better. We love that there are so many electrical outlets at every corner in our newly renovated room, which is definitely something we need as we are huge techies. Both sides of the bed have more electrical outlets on the night stands. I don't really think a fridge or a microwave is needed, especially in this city. It's a good opportunity to try out all kinds of food. It's just a few blocks from Chinatown and also Union Square is just down the street. There are tons of choices for dining.
The curtains were updated to a set of blinders. The bathroom was small, just like it was before the renovation, but the use of space is way better planned and overall much nicer than it was. Our room also had a walk-in closet that doubled as a huge vanity, which I totally love, of course! The bed was comfy, clean, and we slept well every night during our week-long stay. There's a full length mirror on one wall and a sectional couch next to the desk where there are more electrical outlets. Overall, it was charming and had everything we need. I felt at home right away.
We did run into a few snags. It is an old building after all. Our key cards keep failing and we had to go to the front desk to get a new key card. Sometimes, they had to call someone to fix the door. It wasn't really a big deal. The issue that was more of an annoyance was that sometimes, the room would get warm or hot. We had to turn on the AC, sometimes to full blast. It's odd, because it's February/March and it's cold out. We turned off the old heater, but somehow, it still gets warm and stuffy in the room. We tried leaving the window open and it wasn't enough. Another snag was that the shower got clogged on our 2nd to the last day there and the water wouldn't drain. They offered to switch us rooms after a couple of attempts to fix it. But these "issues" were fixable/fixed no problem.
We didn't hear noises from other guests during the day or night. We didn't hear any dogs barking. We totally love that this hotel is dog friendly! I'm especially grateful, because my dog really helps me with a lot of things. But most of all, this dog friendly hotel made it possible for us to enjoy San Francisco together as a family. We were able to go on 4 to 6 hour long walks all around the city and we had a great time. I'd take our dog to Union Square to potty during the night, because it's only a 5 minute walk and there usually aren't very many people past 9 pm. During the day, I walk our dog to Huntington Park, which is about a 10 minute walk. Huntington Park has a lot of dogs and kids, but mostly dogs. It's a small park, but it looks like a lot of locals go there to enjoy the sun with their pups. Wouldn't recommend going there for night time walks though.
Cartwright Hotel has the charm of old San Francisco. We love staying there. The staff is friendly, helpful, and approachable. Moses from the front desk has been working there for years, and he is an asset to the hotel. I'm glad they have Moses and the other front desk staff with friendly faces. Looking forward to staying there again and again...
Read moreChecked in and was given a room with a small closet for a bathroom. It was so small I could not use the sink and barely had enough space to use the toilet. I asked to be moved to a different room that had more space. They moved me to a “King suite” and charged me $65 more each night. It definitely had more space. It was old and should be remodeled. I had to run the hot water for about 15 minutes just to get warm water to flow. The outlets in the room did not work. I sleep using a cpap machine at night to breath. The maintenance guy came in to check the outlets. He said they would need to be changed and would come back to do it. I waited all day for him to come back but he never did. When I asked the front desk they said he was gone for the day. The next day after having no power for my machine I asked again at the front desk and was told they would have him come to my room. Later that day he showed up and replace 2 of the 4 outlets. Then later that day I came back to my room and found a note saying they were taking the elevator out of service the next morning at 6:00am and would probably be out of service all day and possibly through the weekend. I was on the 8th floor and disabled. So there was no way for me to go up and down 8 floors of steps and carry my luggage down 8 flights of stairs. I asked the young man at the front desk if there was anything they could do for me. He said “if you can’t use the stairs you need to check out” he was very rude! I looked around for a different hotel to move to as I still had 3 more days in the city. After finding a hotel I went back to the front desk to make sure I was not going to be charged anymore. The young man rudely said if I checked out he would still have to charge me for the room. I demanded to not charge me because it was him that said I had to check out and for all the inconvenience they need to not charge me for leaving early. He finally said fine and then didn’t want to give me a receipt. I finally got him to give me one and he was still charging me. I gave the receipt back and told him to refund the charges. It took a good 30 minutes to get it fixed but the charge was already done so now I have to wait 3 to 5 days to be refunded. Never again will I stay here. I plan on contacting the ADA corporation to file a complaint against this place. I’m disabled and they 1. Wouldn’t/didn’t offer to accommodate or help me from the 8th floor. 2. They tried to over charge me on my bill then said they fixed...
Read moreWe stayed here for 6 nights and had an excellent stay. Harold and Josh at the front desk were very helpful, friendly, and welcoming.
Our room was remodeled (loved the bathroom tile, with a view of the city from the shower, with awesome water pressure and very hot water), clean and comfortable, with the character of older San Francisco days. The bed was comfortable; the sheets were clean. We had an entertaining view of the city below that was fun to sit and watch throughout the day. This hotel is in an excellent location. However, some might feel it isnt a safe location, but I imagine these are simple country folk who would complain about any big city. Across the street is a 24 hour 711, and a Walgreens with typical business hours. We didn't rent a car or drive; we had a refreshing time exploring the city on foot. The steep sidewalks made for good exercise and interesting views of architecture. It was fun to feel like a local, and find non-touristy restaurants in the nooks and crannies of the city.
If you are looking for a large room, just remember you are in a city, and an old one that doesn't have much space to begin with. This city is 7 miles by 7 miles (Hence the name the 49ers). It is a peninsula surrounded by water. So don't expect a massive and sprawling hotel like you'd find in the suburbs.
Close proximity to shopping such as Macys, Louis Vutton, etc. if youre into that sort of thing while you're on vacation. Fisherman's Wharf is walking distance (2-ish miles each way), as well as Chinatown. This hotel is near the Muni busline, as well as a stop for the vintage cable car. I could hear the chime in the distance from my room, which I enjoyed. One additional positive is that the city has low air pollution, due to MANY electric vehicles as well as public transportation. This is also great when walking, as you don't smell the fragrant fumes from gasoline cars. It also cuts down on the sound immensely. The electric cars are almost silent. It was nice to be able to carry on a conversation while walking.
Overall, we had an excellent time in SF and in a great hotel. Thanks again to Harold and Josh at the front desk. They made our stay much more welcoming, even on the Thanksgiving holiday. We...
