Don't know why they have such good reviews. Perhaps for their plates, but their rolls are sub-par at best.
We ordered a Dynamite Boom roll, and it came with both avocado and fish, which were not listed as ingredients (it was supposed to be squid, octopus, mussel, and shrimp). In addition, my wife can't eat fish, and I'm allergic to avocado. Furthermore, the fish was not fresh at all; it tasted rotten! Definitely a shady practice sneaking old fish into a roll (with lots of sauce to hide it). Later they said it was part of their "secret recipe" sauce.
They acted as though they would take it off our bill, but still charged us $3.70 for it!
We ordered a spider roll, which didn't taste great, but wasn't as bad as the first. We also ordered an asparagus roll, which was the best roll we ordered (not saying much).
It's one thing to have sub-par rolls, but it's absolutely unacceptable to change the ingredients in an order.
We felt sick to our stomachs afterwards.
For a four-star comparison, try Aniki's...
Read moreWe stopped by Sushi Toni completely on a whim and were totally blown away by our experience. We had a number of allergies in our party including wheat and shellfish - not the easiest allergies to work around at a sushi place! - but we were not only able to order around it but our server understood and provided Tamari sauce without being asked (Soy sauce is typically brewed with gluten). We had several unique rolls we've never seen elsewhere (HIGHLY recommend the swamp roll) and we had a great chat with the chef - a very interesting individual with a lot of fun stories! After our meal he made us a free dessert - which was amazing, green tea ice cream with pineapple tempura (our gluten allergy party member ate around the tempura). Wonderful little spot that's earned a place in our "must visit when...
Read moreI think I'm unfairly biased against Sushi Toni. Frankly: the food is good. I am squeamish about sushi - I normally only eat it in places that feel fancy to me, which puts my mind at ease. But the food at Sushi Toni is good. Very good. I especially love the tofu appetizer. The rolls are nicely made, the udon has a delicious broth, with nice chewy noodles and good veggies. The chicken katsu is a classic simple preparation and very satisfying (served with bonus salad and miso broth).
Ultimately, this is a classic, unpretentious sushi and Japanese place, kind of like a suburban Japanese restaurant in atmosphere but with better food. The bar seating in front of the chef offers an opportunity to gradually get familiar and friendly with the chef if you live nearby. Cheap and good....
