Rented four electric bikes for a sunny day in SF and were told the range on the bikes would be 20-30 miles, depending on how efficient you ride it. Went through the planned route with one of the employees and some quick instructions and we were on our way.
Just after a few miles we noticed the battery level on two of the bikes were already starting to decrease fast, so we tried to ride them as efficient as possible, but after reaching 12-13 miles two of the bikes were already the lowest battery level so we were expecting them to die pretty soon.
At this point we were in Sausalito so we had to ditch our planned route of coming back over the brigde and decided to take the ferry instead, due to the low battery level. This ended up costing us an extra 12.5$ pr. person. After getting off the ferry we drove through the city and ended up getting back to the shop with the battery still holding up on all bikes, which was an positive suprise.
Upon arrival one on the employees asked us if everything was as expected and told them about the battery indicator being at the lowest point very early and about two of the backbrakes not being 100% on the bikes. Did not get the chance to mention this at the site, but the suspension on all bike were really poor also, which made the ride uncomfortable.
This eventually led up to me having a longer discussion with the manager that totally ruined this experience us. Whatever we told him, there would follow a longer explanation as to why we were wrong and he was right, not willing to listen to what we had to say. Instead, he kept on talking about unrelated matters and trying to steer away from the real issue, that the bikes performed poorly. Eventually we got him to take one of the bikes out and got him to admit that the brakes were not working 100%. From the discussion we learned that we had also not been given all of the instructions needed as to how the bike and battery indicator works, and the manager at this point told us that we should read the manual before riding a bike like this (what?).
The experience in itself was maybe three stars, but followed by an discussion with an arrogant manager, not willing to listen to what his customer has to say, I see no option to give this just the one star. Expensive as well, several cheaper companies...
Read moreThis is the first time I've ever left a one-star review for any business. My friend and I, both experienced cyclists, rented bikes from Golden Gate Rides for a leisurely afternoon at Golden Gate Park and the bridge. Unfortunately, our experience was anything but enjoyable.
About half an hour into the ride, the chain on one bike started malfunctioning but it was still rideable so we just carried on. Forty-five minutes in, the back brakes on the second bike seized up, almost causing me to take a hard fall. Thankfully, this happened on a flat surface and not while descending the bridge.
When we contacted the owner, he immediately blamed us for the bike issues. After making us wait for 45 minutes, he arrived with a replacement bike and attempted to fix the broken one but failed. He left us with the replacement bike, which was a sightly better quality electric bike.
However, an hour later, just as we were about to board the ferry, the front wheel of the first bike with chain problems literally came off. The owner met us again on the other side of the ferry, but this time without a replacement, forcing us to ride an Uber back to the bike shop. Instead of apologizing, he blamed us for not knowing how to ride bikes! For context, I’m a former triathlete, and my friend is a seasoned cyclist from Belgium.
Despite the dangerous and unreliable equipment, the owner refused to apologize or offer a refund. The bikes we were given were cheap, no-name brands, clearly not maintained, and highly unreliable. Renting from Golden Gate Rides is a gamble with...
Read moreWhen the rear tire went flat on my radwagon last week, this place was a godsend. It happened near Union Square, I didn’t know of any bike repair shops nearby and was starting to panic about having to haul my 80 pounder with a flat somewhere, somehow.
I found Golden Gate Rides on google maps and called, skeptical that they’d fix my flat since their main business is bike rentals. To my surprise, they told me to bring my bike in so they can have a look and maybe fix it. I was two blocks away and this was my very best chance.
Let me just say, Bigyan and Dave came through for me BIG time. They did not have the right tube on hand for my odd radwagon tire which is a 24x3, but told me that if I can leave the bike overnight they would get the right tube and replace it for me. (And we knew it needed a new tube for sure because the leak was around the valve post.)
My bike was ready the next day as promised and the fee was very reasonable. We’ve been able to resume our daily school commute without interruptions, all thanks to the handy repair job done by the Golden Gate Rides team.
I’m not a big reviewer, but felt strongly about wanting to share this positive experience with others. So please allow me to add another glowing review to this business because they really go above and beyond to help their customers in a genuine and kind manner. Even the random ones like me who roll off the street with requests outside of their repertoire. Thank you,...
