Read moreGreat hotel! Mostly perfect, just a few small things keeping if from a 5 star review.
Really cool lobby and fantastic game room. The shared spaces in this hotel are extremely well thought out and useful. We used the game room every night we were there. We played quoits, ping pong and corn hole and used the long tables to play card games. This indoor / outdoor space is lively and lots of fun. There are fire pits outside to gather around at night, and the hotel provides s'mores for guests (I think just one night per room but we didn't ask for more, so they may provide more nights if you ask). The fitness center had everything we wanted (ellipticals, tread mills, bikes, a rowing machine and a weight machine).
The room was small, but well-appointed. Quality mattresses, great bathroom, nice balcony with a view of the SkyStar. Very quiet! When you step onto the balcony, you can hear the music from the patio area and the SkyStar, but in the room with the balcony door closed, you can hear a pin drop.
Fantastic location! If you want to be right in the thick of Fisherman's Wharf, you've got it here. When the associated restaurant (The Socialite - definitely recommend this place!) is open, you can access the waterfront in less than a minute. Otherwise, you walk around and it takes maybe 2 minutes. Very easy walk to Ghiradelli, Pier 39, Boudin, the Maritime Museum, etc. You can even walk to the Exploratorium and Coit Tower if you are more energetic.
Excellent service. I wish we'd gotten the conceirge's name, but a gentleman helped us several times with basic stuff (getting a taxi to the airport, telling us how to get to MOMA on public transit etc). The front desk folks were always helpful and quick with a smile. The housekeeping staff were upbeat and friendly.
Three quibbles. Biggest to smallest:
Do not stay here if you have more than two people in a room. We had me, hubby and 9 year old son. We booked a room that accommodates 3 with 2 double beds. I don't think I've ever slept in a double bed at a hotel, but it's not big enough for two people. My husband and I are both small people, but we found the beds just too small for a good night's sleep. We considered trying to switch to a King with a roll out bed, but thought a roll out bed would be uncomfortable, too, and who wants to move halfway through a four night vacay?
Some of the game room games were in a bad state of repair. Foosball was laughably unplayable (screws were missing, so players just spun around on the poles, one player was missing half his body, one pole would completely fall onto the table if you pulled too hard ... truly unplayable), the giant Connect Four needs repair to keep the tokens in the game board, the pool table needs re-felting. It felt like with $5000 or so, they could make all their games playable. The hotel's not cheap, so it's surprising to me that they aren't keeping up with these repairs.
Smallest gripe: lobby coffee. I'm not sure why, but they only have one Keurig machine in the lobby for guests to get coffee. I hate Keurig, but that's not even my concern. Why only have one? This was always a pinch point and there was always a line. Get a few more machines, or ditch the Keurig and get the kind of coffee urns where people can just fill up a cup, add some cream and go. One Keurig makes for a long wait.
Again, wonderful hotel. If it was just me and hubby, this would be my go-to hotel. Or if I was getting two rooms (one for me and hubby, and one for kiddos), this would be a great choice. The game room and location make this a wonderful family hotel. I just wish they'd change up the 2 double bed rooms and put in a queen and a full or something like that. It would be unrealistic for 4 adults to comfortably stay in one of these...
