Situated in an older building with steep steps and narrow winding hallways, Sunnyside is a classic remnant of San Francisco SRO style hotels available to the public. The hallmark of efficiency, affordability, acceptance, and privacy - offers all the basic necessities to mind your own business and not have to deal with the tech fueled craze of San Francisco real estate. There are 3 floors with decent size rooms with traditional lock and key doors. Most have a sink and a closet, as well as a TV, fridge, microwave, and other basic appliances. Some have nice views of the area. Speaking of the area - 6th Street and Mission is a well known corner packed full of SF flavor and local action, stores, bars, clubs, social services, hotels... And not much further museums, all sorts of public transit, shopping, restaurants, luxurious hotels and pretty much all of the city - it's a very central location but be on guard is always good advice. Don't be overly wary though - explore and communicate. Showers and bathrooms are shared. Towels are on request basis. Ring the bell to be let in. The employees are polite but can be quiet and a bit careful. Despite all the location warnings the place has always appeared peaceful and safe inside. Simple, modest, affordable, comfortable, and efficient! Definitely one of the nicer hotels of its class!

If I could put ZERO STARS, i would. Besides the price ($60) a room....that's just what you get....a shitty room with writing on the walls..they have cockroaches, they don't even wash the bedding! They gave me a room that didn't even have pillows, and the bedding was dirty as hell, and it was a blanket that the previous person had bought and put on the bed! This place is super ghetto, just like its location, and the people that work here are SO INCREDIBLY RUDE! Oh, and you have to use a shared bathroom out in the hallway, and a shared shower, and you have to ask the front desk for a towel bcuz they provide you with only ONE TOWEL. This place is a total joke. And those pictures they have posted are pictures of when they very first opened. Trust me! This place DOES NOT look like that anymore. Lol.

Most disgusting overnight stay I ever had! When opening the door, the insects on the floor took off in all directions. Dirty and perforated bed linen. In the room above us, a porno was being filmed at midnight. We understood every word. We booked 2 nights and complained immediately. We were promised that we would get a refund for the second night. We didn't. The responsibility is always put on the manager, but strangely he is never there. I swear that all 5 star reviews are fake!

Good things first: proximity to city centre helpful staff

My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 nights end of August and the first impression is, as other guests noticed, the location is in a rather shady neighbourhood. It seems to be only this street because as soon as we walked to “The Square Pie Guys” just 5mins away, you could see a different street picture. However, there’s nothing to be changed about the location and we weren’t bothered by it too much. What really bothered me were the unsanitary common rooms - aka the bathrooms. They might get cleaned on a regularly basis but I doubt that they were cleaned properly because often enough I’ve found hair in the bathtub (could also be the guests fault for not cleaning up after themselves) or trash of used shampoo bars / etc.

The worst thing nonetheless was in our room (private not dorm) weird yellowish marks on the wall no AC window is dirty as hell

BEDBUGS OR DOME KIND OF BITING MITES. I’ve experienced some itchy bite marks after the first night and thought they were mosquitos. After the second night I got more bite marks and they were all unusually close to each other in a “road-like way”. I then searched for small brown spots (feces spots) and have found a few on the wall near the floor. Unfortunately it was hard to tell what it is because the wall itself wasn’t really clean as I’ve described earlier.

Now, 5 days after leaving the US and coming home, I have concerns that we brought some bugs with us BACK HOME from that place. There are no signs of them yet albeit more bite marks on my arms and legs but in case we should find out that there a bedbugs in our home and that we would have to go through a tedious cleaning and disinfection routine / pest controller in the worst case, we will seek legal advise and claim a refund.

Never ever in my life, travelling to countryside parts of Asia and Africa, have I had a problem with bedbugs up to now. So despite the budget price and staff friendliness, I will not go through the anxiety again of bringing a...

Newly renovated–a lot of the rooms have private bathrooms now–and it's clear they've put in the effort the past few years, cause this place has come a long way from what it was.

It's still definitely a budget hotel, one of the cheapest in the area, in fact. I've stayed in almost every cheap hotel in downtown SF–you can't beat the price here. With that in mind, my best advice is: HAVE REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS.

The 6th street location is actually very convenient. Lots of nearby transit & it's in walking distance of the mall/Union Square. Clearly it's cleaned up a lot in recent years, as well. 6th street used to be liquor stores, low income housing, & homeless people. Now, there's busy nightclubs, bars, and restaurants all along the street. The homeless problem is still painfully obvious, & noise from the alleyways can often be heard thru the night, especially if your windows are open.

Thankfully, the staff does a good job of keeping the crazies out. If they don't recognize you, they may stop you on your way in to check your name/room #... Don't take it personally...they're just making sure everyone stays safe, and at least they arent rude about it. Even so, the crowd is diverse to say the least. If you're uptight, you should probably stay away.

Unlike other nearby hotels with similar rates, however, there's no gross bugs, they do their best to keep it clean, and they don't play any games or try to get over on anyone. They're fair about returning your deposit at checkout, as well.

In conclusion, if you're a single traveler or a couple looking for a cheap place to sleep and shower in the middle of downtown SF, this is a...

If I could give them 0 starts I would. When I woke up in the morning I was really itchy and I noticed bumps on my hands, I left the hotel earlier than my husband and while I was out and about I looked into what these bumbs could be and I found it may be bed bugs. . My husband left to meet me for breakfast and I told him about this since he had the same Marks. He called the hotel to talk to them about this and they were very rude and hung up on them and when we went back 2 hours before checkout we got to the hotel and they had taken the liberty to go in our room and pack it up for us and had our belongings waiting behind the counter. When I asked why they did this I was just told I needed to take my stuff and leave. I inventoried my belongings right there because I noticed a bag missing and asked where it was and I was told they didn't have it and this was all the stuff In my room and I needed to leave. Now before I can go home today I have to treat all my belongings and myself for bedbugs because we indeed picked them up from this hotel. It was the only place we stayed on our trip. 😫 So not only am I bringing home bed bugs but I'm also NOT bringing home my brand new $150 suitcase with all of my husband name brand clothes (which happen to be the same size as the men working the counter at the hotel .weird) WORSE...
