Run away, don’t stay here. I just had the worse hospitality experience of my life. I called the day before given they said they would cancel our reservation given a card issue. Since it was after business hours I had to wait until the next day (Friday) the day I was traveling, to call the bank. When I called my bank they stated absolutely No charges have been attempted by Washington Square Inn. This was my first warning sign from the universe to run and not stay here, but given the Memorial Day weekend, our first time in San Francisco, our plane had just landed, we were concerned there wouldn’t be other hotel availability so we proceeded to try to stay here. The Inn had indicated to us someone will be at the desk to help us check in on our arrival. There is no one at the front desk to check you in or assist you or welcome you to your stay. It’s beyond flabbergasting and confusing. Horrible customer service and no clear specifications on the website about the electronic self check in process. No e-mail telling me I must download and app to get into the room, I had to hear this information from another guest at the Inn. When we got to the Inn, the front door was locked, and it took over an hour to get checked into our room. I asked them to run our card. They kept telling me that my card didn’t work. When I called my bank to check what happened they said absolutely no charge had been made or attempted. It was not until we arrive on site were we able to get them to correct their computer malfunction. The locals appeared to be un-phased by the self-check in process, which was equally concerning they put up with such mistreatment. Then when we got to the room, the towels were dirty, the pillows were lumpy, and there is no deadbolt on the door to keep you safe from some random person entering your room. The neighborhood gave off shady vibes. (someone outside our window). I am from Albuquerque so this is saying a lot. The Inn Keepers were so discourteous, when we reserved the room for 3 guest there was only 2 towels. When I asked for another towel. They told me to go get it myself. When I gave them feedback they knew 3 of us were coming so how come they didn't provide for us comforting accommodations with 3 towels. They tried to gaslight us and say that was not in our reservation. I have e-mails confirming 2 adults and 1 child. Why would I lie? again I am a doctor I have no reason to lie. I asked how they will make this up to us and they gave me no good response. How rude of them to not think of my child as a guest. Charging us $240 a night, for them to do absolutely nothing for you. Outrageous and unheard of. My experience continues to get worse. The shower started leaking. We didn't even touch it and it start leaking all kinds of water. When I tried to turn it off, it wouldn't turn off or on. MY original plan was to get into the Inn, rest take a nap, eat dinner, then get ready to go to a concert, but that was not able to happen given the un-working shower, the dirty towels, and the fact it took over an hour to get into our room. How do you expect anyone to stay at a place without a working shower? I asked them to work with us and give us a discount given the distress they have caused us. And they won’t. In fact they decided to steal our money and charge us for the room. As I went to the concert I left my husband in charge of finding us new accommodations as I cant stay at a place for $240 a night without a working shower. We left immediately after the shower fiasco, as you cannot expect me to stay in a place without a working shower. I was willing to work with them to pay for the time we spent in the room, as I do not think its fair they are charging us the full cost given their discourtesy, shady business practices and lack of hospitality. The management seams unable to work with us. Any other hotel would reimburse you for the discomfort cause, but they decided to steal my money and stress me out instead. I have never been more stressed out in my entire life when trying to stay at a hotel.

Good Value. But.... The locations of the property is excellent. Right across from Washington Square Park. Super close to so many restaurants and really close to Club Fugazi where we had tickets. Self check-in and digital keys were easy to use. But.... The hotel is just too old. There's no sound proofing or insulation from noise from the other guests. They weren't even particularly loud but you could hear every footstep much less *loud* suitcases wheeled down the hallway. Our front door was so loose it's frame that we had to prop pillows against the door so it didn't shudder every time anyone in the hallway did anything else. The toilet paper holder was broken and had already been poorly mended another time. There was a residential extension cord under the nightstand (which was considerate) but also doesn't look very classy or professional. There isn't any staff on-site but they are available if you need them by text or phone. We didn't need anything. You let yourself in with a code to the hotel door and you use your mobile phone for a digital key for the room door and both worked great. The hotel was clean and there is a cute little lobby with a Keurig, tea, couches, and little tables for computer work and chairs for reading or socializing. Communication with Booking.com was excellent. They kept us really well informed as the day got nearer to our stay and they gave great parking tips for the North Beach Garage which is only 2 blocks away. BTW, I don't think there was an elevator which might be in impediment for some people. If you are a GREAT sleeper, this is a cute little hotel for a great price.
