I did read the reviews about the cleanliness issues, but decided to book a night anyway. My feelings about those types of complaints are that people are too picky. However, this time they were spot on. My stay was mostly bad, but here were a couple of good things that I'll mention later. I'm not a fussy person and I don't expect much when the cost is low. I do expect the room and hotel to be something above a flophouse, though. I wouldn't say Red Roof in San Marcos is quite a flophouse, but there were some gross things in my room. There isn't an elevator and there's a shabby appearance to most things. The rooms (both rooms that I occupied) smelled moldy as well, but that wasn't as alarming as the other problems with the room. My room wasn't cleaned beforehand. When I walked into my room, I noticed a bar of soap was unwrapped and by the sink and had been used. On closer observation, there was a used styrofoam coffee cup by the coffee maker. I noticed something spilled on the bed skirt and pulled back the covers to see that there were signs that the sheets weren't changed such as hair and stains. The bed was made up, though, and the trash had been emptied. On a side note, the windows are very flimsy and have a simple latch. I was located on the backside and felt a little unsafe (the back part of the hotel sits closely to a fence and there’s all kinds of weird detritus between the wall and the fence), but I would have stayed in the room if it weren't for the fact it wasn't cleaned. That is something to keep in mind if you’re concerned about security. I called the front desk and the manager was very apologetic. That was one of the good experiences. He did offer the excuse that the housekeeper thought that the man who previously occupied my room was going to return. However, I wouldn't say that is really housekeeping's fault, but because of poor management. The manager moved me upstairs, so I packed my stuff after a long and tiring day and lugged my suitcase up the stairs. There was still the weird moldy smell in the upstairs room and my window was unlatched. However, being on the second floor, I wasn't too concerned about security. That was probably the second good thing because I felt safer. There were various stains on the curtains and furniture, but these were old stains and they did not concern me as much. When I took my shower the next morning, the tub didn’t drain. I tried not to think about what was clogging the drain as I took a quick shower. So, I'm just adding my review to the others. You will probably get a "clean" enough room if you go there, and the price is right if you like to economize. The staff is friendly enough. You'll just have to take...
Read moreI don't understand how this hotel had good reviews. First room that we went into had a musty axe spray smell & felt humid inside (thermostat said 70 degrees). Then I looked over and saw a roach crawl from next to the pillow and went towards the headboard and I never saw it again. I went downstairs to tell them but they were basically like "oh". Then I asked if I can be moved to another room and if there was compensation. He said he could move me to a different room but no discounts. I couldn't book anywhere else that weekend because most hotels I called didn't have enough beds I needed or they were gonna cost an additional $100. (These were hotels I was considering before that were only $20-$30 more at time of booking).
So I stayed and was given a different room. That room had tissues, cookie, crumbs, trash by the headboard. It's a no wonder why they had roaches in that hotel. Told the front desk and they had someone come clean it. I asked housekeeping for extra towels & washcloths since the room only gave us 3 towels and 1 washcloth. She told me I needed to go downstairs and get them from the front desk. You'd think after I had to walk downstairs twice already to ask for a basic clean room, they'd just bring it up for us.
Pool looked really cloudy and didn't have a chlorine smell. Wish it would've been corned a little bit since there was some debris in there but it is an outdoor pool so some debris is too be expected.
Hotel is by the freeway so you'll hear the cars at night. If you're a light sleeper, this might not work for you.
Breakfast was fruit loops and frosted flakes. Some slices bread, muffins, coffee and bananas. The case that had bread & muffins had fruit flies flying around in it. So we didn't bother eating there.
Asked for extra towels and guy at front desk said he could only give me 2 since that's all he had. We had 5 people in our room, towels from earlier was soaked because we took a shower in the morning and after the pool. I wanted them for the next morning. I spoke to another guest member and they were told the same thing when they asked for towels. So front desk was lying when he said that's all he had.
We booked this hotel instead of other ones because our team needed a hotel with multiple rooms available. If I knew the quality of room & service would've been like this, I would've just booked a different hotel and be separated from the team for the night. When I was originally looking for other rooms, the prices weren't far off from Red Roof Inn and had hot continental breakfast included. I regret not going with somewhere else because we paid too much money for the room & service...
Read moreAfter trying to get a Hotel in San Marcos, we unfortunately landed a room at the Red Roof Inn on I-35. This MOTEL was equivalent to the Bates Motel in the Psycho film. The room was filthy and smelled of urine and may have had hourly rates at some point in the recent past. ||||The bathroom was missing a shower curtain, and the floor of the shower was riddled with mold. I refused to shower let alone put my feet on the floor. The back of the restroom door of room 102 had scratch marks that looked like someone was locked in at some point and could not get out. And as if this and the holes in the motel sheets were not clues enough to leave, in the middle of the night (10:30 pm) Motel management provided a demented older woman who was locked out of her room the key to our room. This strange woman proceeded to open our motel room with the electronic key no less than three times, until my husband got out of the restroom and confronted her and the management. The only thing that stopped her complete entry was the door stop. What if it has been a rapist or some other savory individual?|| As it turns out, the motel management did not know where she belonged and since she thought it was out room they provided a key without verifying this with us or anyone else that she may have checked in with. ||||We checked out immediately and demanded our money back and almost called the police. Save yourself, do not check into this place your physical safety is...
