Avoid this hotel. Reservation #72300751 (Sep 5–7, 2025). Room was dirty, insects found on sink, walls, carpet; I had multiple bites overnight. Pool was chained shut though advertised as available—main reason I booked for my kids. Front desk (Josie) acknowledged issues in Rooms 228 & 128. We checked out early to find another hotel. Requesting full refund; will escalate to Choice corporate, booking platforms, and AMEX if not resolved. Photos attached (bugs, bites, dirty tub, locked pool, front desk). Management doesn't care and refuses to fix or address issues. Horrible Experience – Dirty, Bugs & Closed Pool Room filthy with bugs on sink, walls, carpet; woke up with bites. WARNING REVIEW: Comfort Inn by Choice Hotels – Smithfield, NC||Reservation Stay: Sep 5–7, 2025 (checked out early)||I am filing a formal complaint about severe cleanliness, health/safety, and false-advertising issues at this property. We checked in on Friday, Sep 5, 2025 and had to check out the next morning with my children to find another hotel due to the conditions.||What went wrong|1. Unsanitary room conditions|Room was visibly dirty and not properly cleaned upon arrival. Tub and bathroom surfaces had debris and grime. This made the room uninhabitable and below minimum standards.||2. Health & safety concerns: insects in the room|I found bugs in the bathtub, on the bathroom sink backsplash, on the walls, and in the carpeted area. I also received multiple bites on my lower leg during the night.||3. Loss of paid/advertised amenity (pool) The outdoor pool was locked and unavailable despite being advertised as open/available and was one of the primary reasons I booked this hotel for my kids.||4. Front-desk acknowledgment|The front-desk associate (first name Josie) viewed and acknowledged the issues in Room 228 and Room 128.||Impact||We lost time and incurred extra cost finding a safe, clean alternative last minute.||My children and I could not use the pool as advertised.||I suffered multiple bites (see photos).||Requested resolution||I am requesting a full refund for this stay to the original form of payment within 5–7 business days. If not resolved, I will escalate to: Choice Hotels Corporate, Delta Stays, Expedia, Booking.com, City of Smithfield, NC consumer protection authorities, and American Express for a charge dispute. I will also notify U.S. Military lodging coordinators to flag this property as unsafe/uninhabitable for trainees.||Photo evidence (attach with captions)||1. Read moreOne of the most unprofessional businesses I have ever worked with. My husband called and made a reservation for a Fri-Sun stay in one of there hotels with a bath tub rooms. He talked to the hotel manager to make the reservation, gave all his personal information including our card information, was given a price, and told we were good to go for our stay. We arrived late Friday after traveling, went to the front desk and we were told we had no reservation. Then we asked if the room was available still, it was so we asked if we could just book it now, we were told yes but for almost triple the price. We explained to the front desk clerk the issue and she went to talk to the same manager in his office (which is so close he could hear this entire interaction) and he told her there was nothing he could do as the price we were told over the phone was on longer available. It was late and we didn't have a lot of options so we decided to try to make the best of it and stay anyway. We gave our phone number and my husbands name popped up but his last name was spelled incorrectly even though we spelled it over the phone twice. We asked that since we obviously had a reservation they just spelled his name wrong, would they now honor the original price we told. They said no since the reservation was made incorrectly (by them as it was made over the phone) and our card information would not match. By this time we were exhausted frustrated and just wanted rest so we booked the room for the almost triple price. We go into the room we were given and the key won't work, we finally get it reset and it's the wrong room. Smaller bed, no tub. Husband goes back down stairs and we are finally given the right room, only to find the tub dirty and the ac/heat unit so noisy we had to leave it off unless it got unbearable in the room. The linens were at least clean, so we stayed after I cleaned the tub myself. We checked out on Sunday only to be charged more money on Tuesday and when I called to ask why my card was charged again I was told I would get a call back. Its now days later, and 2 more phone calls and no answers. I will be contacting Comfort Inn corporate about this hotels bait and switch practices, and their unprofessional...
Read moreWe arrived at the hotel, and received our room keys. We brought our stuff into the room and the bathroom seemed to have certain bodily fluids on the door. We went out for food and came back and with the air conditioner on full blast, the room was still 90 degrees. We had gone down to the desk and were offered a box fan, but we declined as it wouldn't help make the room cooler, just push the hot air around the room. The employee was not very kind about it, but assigned us a new room and told us she would get the air conditioner started, and when we got into the new room, the air conditioner in the new room was better, but I was still sweating. We had gone into the bathroom and found a roach in the coffee machine - after this, I did not stay the night. We had grabbed our stuff and left the property because if there's one roach, there are many.
Upon calling the manager the next day to ask him not to charge my card, he tried to give me half the rate back, however, we did NOT stay in the room overnight, and both rooms were unacceptable - both in how clean they were, and the lack of an air conditioning unit that could properly cool the room to a livable level. In the stairwell there were red stains in the carpet and also in the room, there was also food particles all over the room as if no one had come to clean the room. I will not ever consider a Comfort Inn again, I thoroughly checked the room for other kinds of pests before leaving as I was afraid to have brought back anything on my belongings.
The filth in the location we stayed in was so bad I don't know that I'd ever consider staying at a Comfort Inn again - this location should be assessed and the cleaning protocol should be modified. For $120 a night, I would expect more - right across the road, $20 more got us a room with a working air conditioner, a clean room, and very friendly staff. The only friendly staff I had spoken to was Tom at the front desk that night we left - he was kind and understanding - everyone else was...
