Let me preface this by saying the people working at this hotel were all lovely and incredibly helpful. So while this is overall a negative review, the staff did everything they could to help us. Unfortunately, when the issue has to do with the physical design of the room, there’s not much that can be done.
That said, my partner and I had booked a one bedroom suite for the week. We need this specific type of room in order to create separate work and sleeping spaces, as we both have fairly different work and sleep schedules for the week, and we needed part of the space for a workspace.
What we received was an “open concept” room, which has no walls or separation of any kind. Not a suite, not a one bedroom. Even the bathroom is part of the same space. Aside from the bathroom, it’s basically a normal, base rate studio-style hotel room but with an extra, awkwardly placed TV and a couch. Completely false advertising.
And to add a bit of insult here, the toilet in the bathroom-area is in a public-restroom style stall, which is to say the door to the toilet room does not reach the floor and is only about 7 feet from floor (which it doesn’t reach) to the top. It’s made of frosted glass, so with lights on you can see someone sitting on it easily. It also doesn’t lock and swings both in and out…and can easily hit the toilet when swinging in. Not exactly well thought out.
The shower door is similar, but does reach the floor at least. Though, as a small positive to this otherwise poor room, the shower is quite nice, if a little underpowered for the overhead part, but the hand wand more then makes up for that in power.
When we took the issue of the lack of walls to the front desk, we learned that they have 5 “one-bedroom suites” in the building, but only 2 of them are as advertised. The other three are this falsely advertised monstrosity. Unfortunately the other 2 were booked out for half of the remainder of our trip, so moving wouldn’t make much sense. To reiterate, the front desk staff were wonderful, just the physical room was not, and their hands were tied here. It’s also completely random which room you get, unless you know in advance, can call the hotel, and they can guarantee it for you. I assume they can do that anyway.
Unfortunately this is a dealbreaker for my girlfriend and I, so we checked out after one night and booked a room at the grand hotel down the road. I’m writing this on my phone at a restaurant in between the two, so we haven’t checked in there yet. I can’t say whether I recommend it or not, but I did call and check and their rooms are as advertised, at least.
In brief: Front desk and other staff are wonderful. 3 of 5 “one-bedroom suites” are not one-bedroom, nor are they really suites. It’s a crapshoot which you get. Shower is great. Toilet stall is very, very not.
If you’re a single traveler or have a similar schedule to and are traveling with your romantic partner, this room would probably be fine if you can get it for $180/night or less. The basic rooms are probably fine too, but I can’t say for sure. You’ll have a good experience with the staff. But I can’t in good faith recommend the place based on the false advertising and especially for the price.
Update, the next day: My partner got a call from the assistant manager of the property this morning. They were incredibly nice and understanding, which seems to be a running theme for the staff here. They gave her some Marriott Bonvoy points in apology, and mentioned that they were going to work with their marketing department to fix the way this room is advertised. The other issues with the room still remain, so I’ll leave the actual room at 2 stars, but I’m bumping the entire experience up a star in anticipation of the advertising issue getting fixed, and an excellent show of goodwill from the management. Service here was 5 stars in the original review, and this call definitely proves that the management really does care about...
Read moreSo I have stayed here a couple times & never really was "amazed", at least not overly so that I was inspired to write a review at least. Comfortable, quiet, can't complain, served the purpose I needed it to... that was always my experience before. Just fine. That being said, there is one thing about the AC brand that I particularly love & that is their breakfast. It's not like other hotels options, that is for sure. It is more of a European style spread; $16 for all you can eat prosciutto, salami & other cured meats, assorted cheeses, fruit, yogurt, quiche, scones. They offer espresso & also A la Carte items that are made to order from the kitchen, which are delicious! So this brings me to my recent stay. I was (unfortunately) kept awake VERY late by the 87298342 children that were staying in the hotel the same weekend as I was. (This is not typical of this property, btw. It was always super quiet the other times I'd stayed here) So, around 8:30 in the morning when I woke up after only 4 hours or so of sleep, I called down to the front desk & explained what can only be described as "the migrating herd of 7-12 year olds above & below me all night long" & he promptly offered a late check out & was VERY understanding. I was happy with that & decided since I was already up I'd go enjoy some of that awesome breakfast and then take another snooze! Love Sunday mornings! Jackie was super friendly at breakfast. We chatted about our big families and she even made the effort to see if they had biscotti, which I love when I order a cappuccino. They didn't, but I appreciated the effort. I stuffed myself with cheese & cured meats & fruits, and told Jackie I'd be back before 11 to order an A la Carte item and hit the buffet one more time before they closed. Fast forward to 11:08 when I awoke with a start from my hotel room. Yup. I overslept. I hurried downstairs and there was Jackie with a (very sincere) apologetic look. Bummed out, I signed my check and walked over to the little snack area to see what was offered and to get a drink. I must have looked like someone kicked my dog, because one of the hotel associates, Sevy, came over & asked me if I would like a croissant. Oh man! Would I ever! So he went to the back and got me not one, but TWO, fresh fluffy croissants and I was as happy as a clam! It may not sound like much, that Sevy & those darn croissants made my day. So I am writing this review to say THANKS SEVY for looking out & feeding me! & for people in the service industry, a little goes such a long way. It didn't take much for Jackie so be so friendly and nice & for Sevy to walk in the kitchen and grab me a delicious buttery french pastry, but it made all the difference in my experience at the AC Sunnyvale & it made all the difference in my day :) Thanks again to all the staff,...
