Wow, this was worse than I was expecting, and I was braced for it to be bad. Expensive, tiny portions, and open for very few hours a day - and those were its best features!
Nothing like my dad used to make, the rice balls are now premade, so there isn't a long wait anymore. But this means they are lukewarm at best (and I went pretty early so don't tell me I was there too late).
They are even smaller than I thought based on other photos with people's hands (maybe they just had baby hands).
They are disgustingly sweet. Like I had 2 bites and got sweeted out. No dessert for me tonight. :(
The yiao tieu inside are rock hard like they're a month old and stolen out the trash behind 99 Ranch. It cut the roof of my mouth after just the first bite.
The rice isn't sticky enough and is the wrong texture.
The dau jeung - 30% sweet, apparently - isn't the worst I've had. But low sugar Vitasoy is better and cheaper.
And the unfriendly sign about paying for the decorative display if you break anything on it is unnecessarily confrontational. If you're that worried about it, put it in a glass case. Or don't have it at all. There's nowhere to sit and wait; put a bench there and stop worrying about your precious...
Read moreI'm glad a Chinese rice burrito place exist here but I do wish it's a little better and more authentic tasting. The price is high for what you get but because it's actually a store with rent and staff so it's acceptable. The taste is a little worse than what you can get at Marina Markets but what I have problems with mostly has to do with the ingredients used in the rice burrito. The rice burrito uses either purple rice or white rice. Both don't use enough sticky rice (it uses a mix of sushi rice with sticky rice) so the rice is too soft without the chewiness of sticky rice which is normally used for the texture. The other problem is the Chinese donut used is too crunchy which is mostly due to the fact it's not freshly fried. The other minor problem I have is that they choose to have marinated egg instead of salted egg yolk which is minor but non ideal. Overall it's alright if you don't care for authenticity and just want to get something to fill you up 聊胜于无. I do like how easy it is to order online and that it's open in the morning because traditionally that's what rice...
Read moreI love it here. If I could eat the fan tuans here every day I would. I have been ordering delivery often while working from home.
My go-to order is the purple crunchy rice burrito with soy milk. It’s nutritious, filling and healthy. It stimulates digestion because of the fresh ingredients and pickles from Taiwan.
I have been to Taiwan twice and it is food heaven there. Xiaoman provides meals that are authentically Taiwanese. They remind me of the breakfast you can find walking down the street along Taiwan— fresh soy milk everywhere. Xiaoman is one of the few places with authentic Taiwanese food in the Bay Area. It’s hard to find good ones. The price point is not bad for the Bay Area. I believe they try to keep prices low and give a lot within the fan tuan itself.
The shop itself is very clean and you can also order in person. Service is pretty quick and they are...
