I’ve taken a few minutes to reflect on my first couple of light rail trips before posting a review here. I admit that I was cynical of the light rail to begin with. I thought that there were other areas in Sydney with greater public transport needs. However, as testing began, I found myself forgiving the inconvenience caused to those who live or travel along or across the light rail route. I use public transport every day. I’m a supporter of effective mass public transport. I live in Randwick and work in George St. In theory, the light rail should be a convenient transport solution for me. My initial view is that this is way too slow, I could have easily outrun the train. The journey time is two and a half times what was talked about in the initial information sessions in my area. It is significantly slower than the bus. I can’t believe that we have waited three years for a less user friendly solution. Unless the light rail can improve its trip times by at least 100% (which would still mean it takes longer than the bus) this will be remembered as a waste of money only fit for tourists with time to enjoy the view and little kids without responsibilities. I gave it one star for facilitating the removal of other vehicles from George St and 1 star for looking pretty This is not a mass public...
Read moreIf you're using the light rail, especially the L2 or L3 lines, this is the station you need to remember. You should get off at Central Chalmers Street to access the train station, where you can catch trains to anywhere, including the airport. From Central, you can also connect to the new autonomous metro system.
There are a few ways to enter Central Station from Chalmers Street light rail station, but I recommend using the new entrance across from the platforms. Just cross the platforms, and you’ll see it. Avoid the entrances at both ends of the light rail station. I suggest the new entrance because it feels more modern and appealing, whereas the older entrances tend to have a less pleasant atmosphere, sometimes with a few homeless people around, which can be a bit sad to see. That’s why I always use the new entrance—it’s nicer and more in line with the modern...
