I had been shopping around for a salon to get box braids, and ended up popping into Ammerose for a visit. There were three stylists and they were all doing hair, but when I came in they all greeted me right away. The owner was kind and professional, offered me a seat and handed me a look book and the price list, seamlessly answering all my questions whilst styling her client. I did not feel pressured and when I said thank you and left they all said goodbye and that they hoped to see me again when I was ready.
A few days later, I called Ammerose on a day when they were closed, didn't leave a message, and still received a call back within the hour! All of my questions were answered (it was my first time getting box braids) and my appointment was made
My appointment with Shinju was a professional and relaxing experience. Shinju was personable and patient, adjusting the size of my braids and asking me how I was every step of the way. The owner who I spoke to came over offer me water, and to check on me and to make sure I was happy with my hair more than once. I got about 20 jumbo braids that reached all the way down to my tailbone, and it took about 5 hours start to finish.
Unfortunately a couple of days I had a bad reaction to the jam that was used at the salon and my face and eyes swelled terribly. I called the salon and Shinju washed my hair (with my shampoo as I have sensitive skin) and even did an apple cider vinegar prewash, free of charge. Thankfully that worked and after a few days my skin calmed down. Shinju even looked up a treatment to help with my lanolin (what I reacted to in the braid jam) allergy and shared the link with me during my appointment.
Over a week later Shinju sent me a message to check up on me and make sure my skin was alright.
My box braids look natural and are light and easy to care for, even with my work (I am a dance teacher and work out often!)
Almost two weeks later and even with frequent washing and minimal products, my braids are still going strong and I'm beyond pleased. The price was $350 and well worth it. I would return again in a heartbeat, for braids or other services. Best decision to protect my long 3c hair and beat the summer heat!
Definitely give Ammerose Salon a go, but if you have a wool allergy or sensitive skin, bring your...
Read moreI've bin here twice, and the first experience blew every other salon out of the park! I had so many compliments. And my Dutch braids with extentions lasted just over 7 days. The price was a bit high compared to other salons but you definitely got what you paid for. The experience by itself was amazing, all the staff was lovely!
Now the second time I went, I arrived and explained what I wanted to the solo lady that was there and She thought it was odd that I wanted extentions, because my hair is already so long. I said I wanted to keep the length, she corrected me and said it would look weird and bulky if we did extentions. I did mention that I explained everything over the phone prior to the appointment and she said she heard no details about it and she couldn't do some hair styles because she had fake nails on? I had to show her my picture of my hair on there Instagram before she said she could do it. Right then and there I felt a little discouraged but I trusted the outcome would be worth it. After the braids where done there was another customer that arrived so I guess I was a little rushed. She didn't show me my hair from the back or anything. (My fault too, I should have asked)
I then got up and paid. And she charged me 40 dollars extra then the last time I was here. Not to mention she said she could only use the card machine because she didn't have a till or access to it. Unfortunately I only had the exact amount of cash on me because I was prepared to pay 125 and leave a tip. But ended up being 165 with no tip.
update in hair after I left the salon and got home I noticed there were so many kinks in my hair. So many fly aways. There were a couple parts of my braids that were loose that resulted in having to take my hair out after just a couple of days :(
Going into this experience again, and that's if I do, I'll explain over the phone throughly and encourage them to pass over the information to the stylist on what I want. And ill encourage anyone to ask what price it will be, before arrival.
My 3 start rating is reflecting both experiences. I don't typically right reviews but I felt a little taken advantage...
Read moreI'd never had braids or any kind of hair extensions before, but I'd just had the worst haircut of my entire life a month prior, and I decided I couldn't just wait for it to grow out. I read reviews from a few places in Vancouver, and Ammerose's kept rising to the top, so I took the leap to try braided extensions. I was nervous to be a yt chick asking for braids in a salon where the vast majority of the stylists and clientele were POC, but I was reassured that I wasn't offending anyone, and made to feel welcome. After my street parking expired, Chris led me to the salon's underground parking stall so I didn't have to worry about getting ticketed or towed. Kenta started by cleaning up my side shave, and then I was handed over to Isatou, who spent 6+ painstaking hours braiding in my extensions. Conversation about family, crystals, and esoteric topics made the time fly by, and all of my questions about maintenance and upkeep were answered without making me feel like a dummy. There was zero pulling or discomfort, and the final result blew me away. I've had my braids in for almost 4 weeks, and I still get tons of compliments from strangers telling me how f*cking cool my hair is. Having braids in was just meant to be temporary solution until my true hair was long enough to fix, but I'm thinking they'll be part of my look for longer than I had originally thought... and I'm more than thrilled to keep going to Ammerose, and Isatou, to keep them...
