Lost Lake PassivHaus — Local services in Whistler Resort Municipality

The Passivhaus is an amazing oasis of goodness nestled into nature at the bottom of the Lost Lake bike/xc ski trail network, just outside the bustle of Whistler Village by Fitzsimmons Creek. This is my fave cafe in Whistler at the end of a good bike ride. Yummy fresh baked treats, good coffee, fresh sandwiches, local gelato, juices. Strudel is legendary. Ian and the whole team there are absolutely wonderful. It helps motivate me to get on my bike and go for a ride knowing a Passivhaus stop will be ahead.

They’re a bike rental shop as well. I thought it was a long shot that they might do repairs there. But when the gear cable broke on my bike I pulled into the Passivhaus to see what they could do. “Minor repairs only” I was told. But they had my bike fixed within 10 minutes at a VERY reasonable price. A few weeks later, a friend riding another of my bikes broke the chain at the start of Tin Pants trail. Again, they had it fixed in less time than we could eat a gelato. As this was peak summer biking season in Whistler I was convinced that I was going to be waiting days for a fix at any other bike shop, and at a much higher price.

Besides the Lost Lake trails, the Passivhaus is also conveniently close to the Fitzsimmons Nature Trail, the nature trail that runs up to Lost Lake, the SLCC First Nations museum, Audain Art Museum, a tennis/pickleball court is steps away, and there are nice...

For a change of pace from our downhill skiing this weekend we went to Lost Lake PassivHaus for an afternoon of Cross Country skiing. We were greeted by Joanie who was both friendly and enthusiastic (which is an understatement). My wife had never XC before so Joanie recommended a private family lesson - which was almost the same price as the ticket and rentals! This was the best decision we made all trip! Toshi was our instructor (a Masters Biathlete) who was amazing at giving instruction to our novice mom as well as our intermediate kids! The community is very tight here as everyone that passed us always offered up a friendly “Hi Toshi” as they swished by. The slower pace, warm hearted people and majestic scenery made this a “stop and smell the roses” kind of day and will be etched in our memories forever. And I haven’t even started talking about the homemade treats yet!! If you have the time or want a break from the lift lines I highly recommend a trip to Lost Lake for XC day to remember. A really cool building, the first Passive house in Canada I believe! Passive house design involves no heating or steel in the construction (along with other things), the building design is self insulating and heating - super warm and toasty in there!
