A white elephant project gone wrong from the pre-Financial crisis period of 2007-2008, Fisherman's Wharf (FW) has never lived up to its billing as Macau grew and developed elsewhere, mostly around the Cotai Strip on other areas of the city.
In the past couple of years, a Redevelopment Plan took place few years back. The old giant Chinese Palace and the volcano were torn down and replaced with the Legend Palace property. There is also a large scale canopy now adding shade to the yacht club section and arcade section. Of all the things they have done wrong with FW, the canopy is actually a nice addition, a much more accessible and appealing feature for anyone who wants to visit FW. If they are ever successful in rejuvenating Fisherman's Wharf, I feel the canopy area will be a positive contribution towards that accomplishment.
In the end, most visitors have only a day or two in Macau, which should be spent first in the Macau World Heritage area and then on the Cotai Strip. The Fisherman's Wharf continues to represent a distant 3rd, 4th or even later option, really only something I'd spend time at if I had a couple hours to kill while waiting for my ferry departure at the nearby...
