I had some generally pleasant shopping experiences at this store. I was assisted by a very sweet and helpful lady whose English was quite good. However, at checkout, I felt offended by the attitude of another staff member at the cashier. The customer ahead of me in line was a group of lovely ladies from the U.S. After they completed their purchase and left the store, it was my turn. The cashier casually asked if I was also from the U.S. (I assume because my English accent sounds North American). I said no, I live in Canada.
After checking out, I took out my passport and asked her to help me with the tax refund process. While holding my passport, she asked in an exaggerated tone, “You’re from China? Didn’t you say you’re from Canada?” I said, “I’m a Chinese person living in Canada. So?” A moment later, she said, “So you moved to Canada through marriage, right?” I was stunned for three seconds and didn’t have time to react. I just directly replied, “No, I’m single.” Five seconds later, I realized how obviously offensive that was. Even the staff member who had originally assisted me tried to stop the cashier from continuing.
Having lived in Canada for nearly 20 years, this kind of rude conversation is hard to imagine happening in North America. You can picture how unthinkable it would be for someone in Canada to speak to you like that while holding your passport. We often lack an immediate response to such provocation simply because we’ve never encountered it. Perhaps this staff member doesn’t understand basic manners or that people with the ability and means have the right to choose their passport. Standing behind the cashier counter, representing the brand’s image, she overstepped her boundaries.
Later, at the train station in London when leaving France, I found that the tax refund form from this store couldn’t be processed. The staff at the refund desk told me that the form was issued for airport departures, but I’m 100% certain that I clearly emphasized to the cashier that I would be leaving via Eurostar. I had no issues with tax refund forms from any other purchases in Paris, so I believe this, just like her attitude, was a one-of-a-kind negative experience. I really like this brand’s clothing. It suits me well, and I’ve been buying it in Canada for years. But from now on, whenever I see this brand, I’ll inevitably think of this shopping...
