After a long and stressful day at work, I decided to meet my German girlfriend and her friend at Mamita, a Latin club in Freiburg. They were already inside and had invited me to join them after my shift, since the club is close to where I work.
I arrived around 1 a.m. by bike, slightly wet from the rain. As I parked and locked my bike, the security guard clearly saw me approaching. I walked up to him and said I’d like to come in. He replied in German. Since I don’t speak much German, I politely asked if he could speak English. He just looked at me and said, “Not today.” Confused, I asked why, and he said it was because I was alone.
I explained — first in English, then in simple German — that my girlfriend was already inside. He completely ignored me and repeated that I couldn’t enter. I had no choice but to call my girlfriend and ask her to come outside. While I waited (about 10 minutes, since she was dancing and didn’t hear the phone), I stood nearby. When she finally came out, the same guard returned and suddenly told me I could now go in.
Although I agreed, I was clearly upset. I had already explained the situation, and being ignored like that was unacceptable. While checking my bag, I told him in German: “Du musst hören” (you need to listen), referring to the fact that I had told him earlier my girlfriend was inside.
At that moment, he lightly pushed me and told me in a rude tone to go home — that I was no longer allowed to enter.
Because of this, my girlfriend, her friend, and I decided to leave the club altogether.
This was an incredibly frustrating and humiliating experience. The security guard clearly didn’t understand English, German, or Spanish, and had no interest in treating people with basic respect. As a Latin person, I was excited to enjoy a night in a club that claims to represent our culture — but instead I felt disrespected and unwelcome.
I will never return to Mamita Freiburg, and I sincerely hope the owner rethinks how this place is being managed. If nothing changes, I truly hope people stop going altogether.
On top of that, I will do everything I can to make sure that everyone I know who currently goes to this club stops going as well, and that the word gets out about the terrible service they offer. It’s also clear that they won’t respond to this message — or they’ll come up with some excuse to justify their awful behavior. Because this place is just pathetic. It’s unbelievable that a club can have so many reviews pointing out the same issue and the owner still shows no intention of changing anything....
Read moreMamita's is the only real Latin bar in Freiburg. Most Latin people who live in this city visit it frequently and not only for the music and the ambiance, but actually the place it self is quite nice and big, you never feel crowded or sofocated even when is packed full which is usually the case. There are many places to seat like comfy couches and lounge chairs so it's possible to get a little table and sit if you are not the type to dance all night. They have a very extense offering of cocktails and drinks, alcoholic and not, and the prices are affordable. Entrance cost is usually 6 euros per person but on Friday nights the ladies pay nothing. There is wifi inside and works quite decently, there is no regular cell phone service once you are inside. The toilets are usually quite clean too. Totally recommended, music is also quite good, and I am latina so I suppose that gives my review...
Read moreI am Mexican, with a recent bad experience in this club.
I have visited Mamitas five times; I liked the place and the drink "Cuba Libre mit Havana Club 3 ãnos.". The barman knew the drink I wanted every time I went, and I used to give a good tip.
The second person in charge of the club the two out of five times I went was always kind with good energy!
Unfortunately, the last time the Mamitas's personnel (there was not the second person in charge I mentioned) did not let me enter, and their behavior was aggressive, they pushed me hard, and I fell to the floor, so my glasses got broken, as well as my three chains, one of silver. I called the police, who arrived at the place and required my data to create a report of the situation.
My Mexican and Latino friends, please think twice before...
