Apparently Karlsplatz is a recent name for the square and it is often referred to by its former name of 'Stachus' as we saw on the road signs around the 'platz'.

This was the first place we really saw on our first morning having arrived quite late the evening before and it was very impressive, mainly due to the Christmas food and drink market which was set around a makeshift ice rink. It was Christmas Eve.

The market consisted of different food stalls selling a variety of savoury things - various sausages in combination with different toppings and sauces, and sweet things. Beer and mulled wine was a given and the market reminded us of similar places in Prague and Budapest at Christmas. Everything on the ground floor was outdoor and very cold!

Up the stairs, there was a large open area - similar to a terrace but on the first floor - with bars at either end and where smoking was permitted. These bars offered heat and respite from the cold. While not very cheap the mulled wine was much appreciated as was the opportunity to remove a jacket or two.

From the window we could watch people skating on the rink below and from where we could get a better view of the Stachus itself.

The area is very commercial and through the gate is the main shopping street leading to Marienplatz, but all in all this place was a life-saver on more than...

Stachus is, alongside with Marienplatz, one of the most vivid squares of Munich. Its fountain is aesthetically pleasing, but the noise of cars and masses of people streaming into the pedestrian zone make Stachus a place where I personally don't like to hang out at. Nonetheless: The pedestrian zone and both Stachus and Marienplatz at its ends are something you shouldn't really miss if you are a tourist in the town. All of it is part of the city's core and something the city is...
