Probably the most interesting thing to see at the Old Botanical Garden in Munich is the Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen). This sculptural fountain was created in 1937 by German sculptor Josef Wackerie.
Here you find a stone sculpture and muscular figure of the god Neptune, holding a trident while his fishtailed horses rise from the water. It is fairly typical depiction of Neptune and generally nice to see if you find yourself at the Old Botanical Garden.
There are park benches at the back of the Neptunbrunnen as well as a long curved seating area at both ends of the fountain as well. These are good spots to get off your feet and take a rest while enjoying the fountain and views of the impressive architecture of the (Palace of Justice) County Court building just...
Here in the old botanical garden, which was laid out by Friedrich Ludwig Schell in 1804-1814, is the Neptune Fountain, as is a glass palace, which was built in 1854 on the occasion of the First General German Industrial Exhibition, but fell victim to a fire in 1931. Now only the fountain stands and was built in 1937 according to plans by Joseph Wackerle and Oswald Bieber. The pool, which is 30 meters long and 15 meters wide, rises the figure of Neptune created by Josef Wackerle. Next to a fish-tailed horse, Neptune is in the middle of the pool with a trident and his tunic over his shoulder. I only give 3 stars as I am a little disappointed that many foreigners and drunk people stayed there. There were also some broken pieces scattered around there, which I don't find safe and pleasant if you want to enjoy the sights of Munich. Didn't...
Read moreOn the south side of the Old Botanical Gardens (now just a park), is this interesting fountain. It depicts a muscular statue of Neptune in the middle of the fountain, holding a trident on his shoulder, above a sea horse rising from the water, with two children pouring water into the fountain. The sculpture was created in 1937 at the behest of the National Socialist government, which might explain it's rather Germanic interpretation of Neptune.
I prefer my Neptune to be a bit...
