Yama Soba — Local services in Hakone

This was actually on a guide book recommend eat. I went with my parents. They directed us to the 2nd level and when we got they pointed us to sit Japan's transitional mat (kneeing). Due to health reasons, my dad can't sit that way.

On the second floor, there was a fire place/ mini chair area. I asked one of the lady if we can sit there. She used a very rude tone answer back to us a yes.

As travelers, we offer carry backpacks. There was no sign stating to leave larger bags at a certain area. As we take our place and sit down, the same lady started yelling at us, point at us and in simple English, to put our backpack at the bench area.

They gave us a menus. We looked and decided to order and try to get the staff attention. The pretty much walked by us. When we order, they were rude and hurry us. We got out food, we wanted more water, they continue to ignore us.

I come from Canada. Yes, I am Chinese. But I really felt they were judging us and being racist towards us. Thinking we are tourist from China or being racist towards Chinese (there is several cases when we told them we are from Canada, their attitude changed completely). I been to Japan several times, this was the worst experience I have ever had. The food is good, but will never return because...

Just checked into the hotel Airu and decided to walk around. Super close to the station and walked upon it. It was right before 4pm so it wasn’t too bad to dine in because I think they close at 5pm. The lady made us take our temperature with our hands when we walked in. They do offer takeout. We ordered the tempura, nabeyaki udon, and katsudon. We thought they ALL tasted really good. Lots of rice in the katsudon but I ate it ALL because it was so yummy. Also had side of miso soup. Service was quick, easy, no hassle. Our stomachs were definitely full. My gosh this place was disappointing - why was there a line!? Let’s start with the Oyakodon, barely any meat just loads of onion, sweeter than candy and not filling at all. The Tempura Soba had one Tempura Prawn that was soggy and the broth had no flavour - the whole dish was just tasteless. The staff were impatient in taking orders and there is no payWave available. The downstairs area is very loud and the atmosphere isn’t the best. Overall, I don’t recommend...
