Kappa Tengoku — Local services in Hakone

Kappa Tengoku is a very pleasant onsen to relax in after hiking or sightseeing. Our small group from the United States has visited there twice now. The staff were very kind. We will happily go back again during our stay in Odawara.

There is a short, steep road and many stairs to climb to get there, but the climb is worthwhile. Shampoo and soap are available to use and you don't need to bring your own.

Be sure to bring: The fee to use the onsen (900 yen at this time) 100 yen coin to store your shoes in a coin locker (you will get your money back) 100 yen coin to store your belongings in a coin locker (you will get this money back too) Money for a cool drink at the vending machine (shoutouts to Pocari Sweat) A big towel or two for drying yourself off (Optional) A little towel for privacy A hair band if you have long hair to tie it up so it doesn't touch the water. A change of clean clothes for after you're done.

This is a typical minshuku (home stay guesthouse) which is evidently been running since a while and kind of maintains a feeling of the old times...this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it depends on what one is looking for. For me it was perfect as it was the best rate I could find. Also it has a traditional feeling, rolls are equipped with one bed and tatami and are minimal. Curtains don’t repair much from light in the morning and train station is right below so if you are a light sleeper this is probably not the best option. Staff is welcoming but they do not speak much English and accept only cash, no credit cards. There are quite a few steep stairs to take before reaching up to the entrance so if you have big luggage be prepared! This is my second time staying overnight, and although the stairs are inconvenient, the staff is so incredibly kind to foreigners like me that you forgive the stairs right away. The entire experience feels very authentic if you’re looking for that Japanese experience. The rooms are huge, the futton is quite comfortable and warm, they have a/c in all rooms for summer days, and the water is piping hot! The only missing amenity is hair conditioner, which would be nice to have. The onsen is quite nice too, great for a relaxing bath after exploring Hakone all day.
