NO FRILLS OFFERING LITTLE VALUE FOR YOUR EURO
We booked 3 nights at this place hoping it would be quieter than our previous hostel experience and it was, including comfortable mattresses and pillows.
Located at the other side of the river in Hakone village a 10 minute walk which takes you through a very picturesque setting of 2 rivers with cascading waterfalls (small), and a variety of traditional eateries and hotels.
Many people make the same mistake as us and walk into the hotel that is located just before the hostel where you are met by a lady who really doesn't want to see you no doubt had enough of people asking where the hostel is. So when you walk up the final hill around the bend from the station side, keep going another 15m and you will see the hostel on the left hand side.
There's two parts, one on the right is the main accommodation building and on the left is the bar and kitchen area. Check in is simple and you cannot check in until the time stated even if the room is available it's strange, something we have experienced on several occasions on our 3 month tour.if the room is free then let customers enjoy a little bit of relaxation like we arrived the room was ready but weren't allowed to use it until check in time.
The room itself a squarish box with a double mattress nothing else, 2 X usb plugs and 1 X mains with very little space for anything else. Some of the other boxes had a little more space but more or less the same in each as we checked. One on top of the other so if your lucky you will get something quiet above or below you. At night it's like an oven, making you feel like a nice roasted chicken.
Showers are góod and simple however 3 showers for 20 rooms is pretty low, there should be at least 3 or 4 to 1 ratio per floor. With only 2 toilets and 4 washbasins so on a busy day expect a wait as we did. Towels are extra charge along with anything else that you need. You have a storage area to store your belongings which is great as they are pretty big like for 2 large suitcases or rucksacks however when everyone wakes up in the morning it's choas trying to access your space and there's not enough table space to organise your stuff except on the floor.
The kitchen area is small with tea and coffee nothing else. The bar area is small with a basic offering of drinks at street prices. As a hostel they should be cheaper. There is no breakfast or items to buy for breakfast which isn't really hostel like with the amount of new hostels popping up offering more value.
Location is great with short distances to the village however around the hostel for eating there's virtually nothing.
Recommendations Choose wisely and determine if you cannot find somewhere else with good value for your money. We paid 24000 yen for 3 nights and it was a 50/50 decision as we wanted to try different capsule based hostels for our travel blog, and so far one was disappointing. No breakfast and little space or facilities in the kitchen for private use. Come on your taking advantage of tourism.
I would recommend upgrading and modernising your premises with a new approach to offering customers something extra for the price they are paying. Change is good and healthy.
Paying 8000 yen a night is a little cheeky for what you are offering please take my advice on a professional manner and look at some of the modern hostels that offer much more and adapt, change, meet expectations of weary and tired travelers and tourists but don't take advantage of them.
