Ohtaki no Yu — Local services in Kusatsu

Ohtakinoyu is famous in Kusatsu Onsen for its unique  Awase-yu baths, four for ladies and five for gents. Awase-yu is a traditional style of bathing, where baths of varying temperatures are offered. It is recommended that the bather starts off with the tepid water bath, and move  gradually to the hottest bath. The bath area has a high ceiling with a beautiful wooden structure, and is nicely illuminated with globe-shaped standing lights.

Ohtakinoyu's baths are segregated. For each gender, the offerings include both indoor, and outdoor baths for ¥900 per adult, and  the use of family bath at ¥2000 an hour. The indoor baths include a hotspring bath, steam, cascading, and a cold spring bath, and a special large room for its Awase-yu bath. There is also one irregular-shaped outdoor bath.

It is a unique experience indeed!

We went to this public onsen place and one of us had his shoes stolen from the lockers. The staff were extremely unhelpful and refused to check the CCTV for us. Imagine taking a bath and ended up with no shoes to leave this place. We ended up buying a new pair of shoes at a run-down place right round the corner. Needless to say, the staff did not offer any compensation at all.

We ended up calling the police but they refused to treat this case a theft and did not bother to issue any certificate for us to claim travel insurance as they "do not believe this was a case of theft". Worst yet, the staff were giggling at us at the back.

This is pure discrimination towards foreigners and I find it really appalling by the rudeness I have been treated by both the staff and the police. Most of the five stars comments are likely fake and the discrimination against foreigners are legit. The staff and police should be ashamed of themselves at...

It’s the most expensive onsen in the area but probably the best overall onsen in the area. ¥900 but if you are visiting other onsens you could get the combined ticket for 3 onsens at the price of ¥1600. This should probably be your final stop of the three places. It has great facilities and cafes/restaurants/souvenirs. The baths are super awesome. One huge indoor bath, one kind of big outdoor bath with a waterfall design with trees all around. So perfect with the snow. On the other side of the lockers, I think it’s called awani bath which has its own opening times. This bath is the first picture you see on their website.
