We came here for a one-night weekend stay. It was lovely and I enjoyed it alot.
Parking - available on site. They will handle it all for you, just pass them your car keys. I don't know where the extra parking is but it's free and taken care of!
Rooms - we took the japanese rooms. very traditional. Pretty functional and nice. Indoor ryokan slippers and bathroom slippers were provided.
Location - follow their driving directions as the roads are narrow. Roads in the central area are indecisively one way or two way. It's crazy. You can walk out easily to the Yubatake, just a few minutes. We went out once in the afternoon and again after dinner for the night view. You must go and see the night view, it's also gorgeous. No complaints. There's food outside and even a Cafe Aspen selling pizza just round the back. So lovely.
Food - bundled dinner and breakfast were lovely. Served in a dining room for us but wow it was so beautiful. There's a big open room area with a fireplace!, and also some other nooks that are enclosed and more private. But they all seemed equally lovely. I would have enjoyed any of them. The dishes themselves were immaculately presented, fairly tasty despite being so special/different. Enjoyed them. Only odd thing was the breakfast fish which was like what is this. I recommend for foreigners to just take salmon, probably easier to taste. Had a bit of incident where the waitress dropped the miso soup on me but it was resolved and they gave us free coffee which was really delicious.
Onsen - didn't use the private onsen. the public/shared onsen was quite lovely. The men's outdoor onsen was especially pretty, just a door away, and it was so beautiful with the snow falling into the little garden. Wow. It was nice. The yubatake has some public footbaths, which are really really really fun to do. The reception provided us with a small bag and small towels to bring out. very nice of them. Really completes the experience that you are well taken care of. It's also a nice touch to choose your yukata design. It's not a huge deal but better than the uniform looking thing from the other big hotels. hah.
While most staff only speak Japanese, some of the Taiwanese staff speak very good Mandarin! The hotel also replies well to emails in...
Read moreOne of the things we really liked about this ryokan is its accessibility to Kusatsu Bus Terminal (5min walk), the town's central, Yubatake (5min walk), and Sainokawara Park. ||||It was also very family-friendly. We brought our 1-year old baby along and there were no problems. The ryokan's staff were very accommodating and they brought colouring books for her entertainment during dinner. Not all ryokans accept infants so this experience was very pleasant for us. ||||Meals were held at the restaurant instead of in the room. I would have liked the setup in the room for a more authentic experience. However, dining at their restaurant was also very pleasant as it had good views of its Japanese garden which was particularly breathtaking during winter when it was partially covered in marshmallowy snow. Food wise, portion and taste met expectations. ||||There were private onsens for booking but these were really pricey. We went for its public onsens which were separated into male and female. Both male and female onsens have indoor and outdoor pools which also had views of their Japanese gardens. There were no crowds- most of the time I had the whole place to myself. The onsens were also very clean and were well-equipped with amenities and good quality toiletries from Shiseido. ||||The ryokan's staff cannot speak English. However, this was not a problem for us as they had signs with some basic translation in English. They also had a few Taiwanese staff, which made things even easier for us as we could converse in Mandarin.||||Guests could choose their yukata at the lobby and there were a variety of pretty designs to choose from. It was better than some other ryokans I've stayed which provided plain designs at a lower quality. However, it also lacked the personal touch in the sense that the staff do not teach you how to wear them- there is an instruction manual provided in the room. ||||I would recommend this ryokan to families with...
