Fukueido - Japanese Mochi and Jelly Desserts — Local services in Kyoto

I am usually not a fan of mochi, but this place converted me into a mochi lover. The single staff member was so kind to us! When I asked her what she recommended, she mentioned their classic dango and also the sakura mochi. She emphasized how nice the contrasting flavor of the Sakura leaf (salty and a little sour) and the sweet filling inside the mochi is. She also reminded us that all of it can be eaten including the flower. I appreciated the advice which was said without any condescending tone. We paid with card and ate at the benches in the store.

The mochi was so good I couldn't believe it! She was right about how the flavors worked perfectly with each other and the texture of the mochi was incredible. I would definitely go out of my way to buy it again next time I'm in the Kawaramachi area.

The staff also remembered us when we walked by the store again later that day....

We really wish we had time to sit down and enjoy the treats in the shop.

We had two take-away orders for their ohagi (牡丹饼） and sakura mochi(桜餅). The level of sweetness is just right for us. We’re also lucky to visit in autumn to enjoy the seasonal special kuri (chestnut) ohagi.

Sakura mochi was my favorite. I didn’t know they can make a white bean Sakura flavor. The white bean paste is sweet and the shiso( perilla mint ) leaf is salty. You’re supposed to eat it together and I prefer to eat it together because otherwise, it might be too sweet. I also bought the ohagi and kabuki dango which is basically mochi covered in red bean, white bean and matcha paste. I didn’t really like the matcha piece but the other two...
