The best bento Kyoto has to offer, surpassing the offerings from Wakuden and Tsujitome.

The bamboo-wrapped sushi was the single best item, with the blistering zing of kinome in every bite. But there were many highlights, including their specially sourced fu, the konbu-wrapped bream and gari roll, and the sweet prawn head. Even the narazuke was of good quality.

Ironically, the most underwhelming bits were the “classics” — the dashimaki tamago and the saikyoyaki. Both were not significantly better than comparably priced competition, and the latter a bit dry.

If you’re wondering whether to get the largest bento on offer, I would only suggest it if you had a light lunch. There’s a deceptively large amount of food here, meaning that the bento is actually quite reasonable value. Some items are even stacked vertically, so you’ll definitely be full. But definitely don’t get the smallest one either! Because it lacks the sasazushi, and that alone is worth the price...
